Auto Wiper Adjustment

Can anybody please confirm the operation of the auto wiper sensitivity adjustment on their prius for me.

Mine doesn't seem to do anything.

I thought that if I had it on a low setting then adjusted it up, it used to give one wipe as I adjusted it, it doesn't now and the position of the dial doesn't seem to make any difference it seems to be random. I've tried cleaning the sensor on the screen but to no avail.

I'd much rather have intermittent wipe with adjustable delay than auto wipers.

Hiya

I've not had a chance to try mine yet, I ain't been out in the rain!! but,,, if it's the same as my old Avensis t-spirit then the adjustment is irrelevant. the idea of auto wipers is that they will wipe depending on the amount of rain hitting the sensor, ie if it's raining hard then they will flip/flop away very fast, if it's just an odd spot here and there and nothing hits the sensor then they won't come on at all!! As far as I can remember the adjustment on the stalk is for when you actually have it switched on to intermittent - position 1 (if you flip the stalk up and let it rest when it comes back I'm taking as position 1) then the auto wipers will work if the sensor gets hit by water... the next position down is for intermittant, next continual etc.....

(I think - as I say, I've not tried on my gen3 yet.....)

hope this helps/is right???

Hi the easiest way to set the wipers on auto is push stalk up as high as it will go let it fall then push it down 1 click this is the auto position then adjust sensitivity by turning the ring clockwise or anti clockwise hope this helps.

Yep, this setting is either intermittent or auto (depending on if you have a rain sensor or not). If you don't have the sensor then the variable setting changes the intermittent speed (linear), or if you have auto sensor then the system automatically adjusts the wiper speed in accordance with rain volume and vehicle speed, and the variable setting adjusts the sensitivity of the sensor.

So monitoring the volume of rain on your windscreen is the guide to adjusting the sensitivity, not the interval the wipers leave between wipes.

Sorry guys, there may be some confusion here, I have been using the wipers for 5 months now and I know the stalk position is 1 down from the off position then adjust the wiper sensitivity to react to more or less rain on the screen. But the problem I'm having is that when I first put the stalk to the "auto" position the wipers sweep the screen, then the screen gets filled with rain and doesn't clear it until it is absolutely soaked then the wipers just work sporadically sometimes seeming to work when they should and then not, even sweeping the screen after the rain has stopped sometimes. The same occurs no matter which sensitivity setting I put it on. Also, as I said in the first post, previously when I had the wipers on Auto and on a low sensitivity, then decided to up the sensitivity a notch, I may be confusing it with my previous Mk4 Mondeo, but I seem to remember that as I did so the wipers would sweep across the screen once but they don't do that now. This is what I wanted you to check, do your wipers sweep the screen once when you adjust the sensitivity up a notch ?

I have noticed on mine that in the auto position the wipers often don't start up until visibility is almost nil. This is especially so in fine drizzle. On the other hand they do start up in light mist! I thought that perhaps the sensor isn't too good.
