Rav 4.2 Body Parts

Hi does anyone know where I can purchase Rav 4.2 body parts? The rav has been rear ended and Insurance written off on a CAT D, but is fully driveable and repairable I have been advised. So I bought it back of them.

Looks like it will need new rear quater panels, rear boot floor and a back door, not to mention some jig work and a respray.

I just want to price up the panels and door, but dont know where to look.

Any one any ideas.

I tried an on-line search and came up with a few suppliers of body panels. Looked at 3 and they all featured front end parts.

I'd guess there must be someone out there doing other panels. Hopefully aside Toyota!

yep thats all can find, front parts only, the easy parts to change, wings lights bumpers grill etc. but rear end body parts that need welding, where do you get those parts from?

any body shop people on here, will post photos up soon.

I have s suspicion that unless you get the stuff 2ndhand, then its Toyota. Hope I'm wrong.

O dear and I presume Toyota supplied parts will be expensive?

So are far as you know, the are no 3rd party manufactures that supply these parts.

Every body seems to supply front wings but not rear panels? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

How would I go about asking Toyota? Do I just ask in the parts department?

The cheapest route is to ask Parts_King to give you a quote for the parts needed. You could well pick up parts from breakers like doors and rear door; and glass from various suppliers but the other bits are a dealer only I guess. Maybe thats why the insurance write off the car - the cost of getting the parts/body kit.

They will be available. Try phoning a few bodyshops and asking their advice.

ok thanks for your help guys, will phone around.

Its been CAT D as un-economical to repair, they said 9K repair bill???

Does this include the £200 per day hire car that was given? As if the other insurers wanted to repair the rav, no doubt this would take a month or 2? maybe more if there busy, then they would also have to pay the £200 per day hire car fee`s, which over 2 months would cost them a fortune. Had hire car for a month so far.

My options are:

1. Get car repaired in the uk (need to get some quotes)

2. Get car repaired abroad, (low labour charges but will have to look out for good workmanship)

3. Break the Rav for parts ( will be sorry to do this but will be a last resort.)

The Rav was in A1 condition 72k on the clock, not a mark on it.

Here`s a few pictures what do people think from looking at them???

If you need rear parts and you know of a good bodyshop and also want to save money on rear panels, you could maybe find a RAV of the same age that had a hard frontal impact but nothing behind and cut off the panels you need? dunno if that is feasible or not??

BTW - what hire car they given you that you reckon costs them £200 a day!  most people get a micra or a corsa!!

Yep I did think of that, getting the rear end parts from another rav, but I would think this would cost a lot of money to remove the old parts, and put on the crashed rav, Maybe feasable if repair done abroad??

Yes I know most people get corsa`s or a push bike, thats why I asked whether the hire car costs are taken into account when writing the car off? 3 ltr V6, 10 plate Landrover discovery 4,s I presume are not cheap to hire. Still nice to have it. ;-). When the disco got dropped off the lady said we just had this picked up, your the 1st to drive it...blar....blar.....blar....£200 per day to hire......Blar!!

Now if we had the disco for another 2 months while rav was being repaired, then surely this would cost them a fortune? is this taken into account by the insurers??? "computer says NO"???

The disco will be going back in a weeks time, so there ends a month of nice motoring..

Anyone any comments of how bad the damage looks from the pics? or know of any body shop forums? if there are any?

I don't like the gaps from the rear doors/quarters (both sides) are you sure there is no chassis damage? Looks like there would be from the pictures of the quarter panel kinks, looks like the rear end is sitting down a bit

The problem with the rear quarter panels and the reason they are probably not available is the A) limited amount of sales a company would get B ) large panels are expensive to package up and transport without getting damaged c) huge amount of tooling required with minimal return for whoever makes them

I'm sure somebody out there would fix it, but genuine qtr panels are £250 each, plus fitting which is a big job. I think you are better off cutting your losses, sell the RAV and buy another, you are in for a lot of work and expense sorting this one out IMHO

Kingo

Thanks for the reply kingo, yes those gaps worried me too. It does look like the rear end has been bent down a little, as for chassis, I presume any serious chassis damage and it would be CAT A or B written off, and as such crushed as would not be allowed back on the road.

I presume jig work would pull the back straight out again, but then its whether it would need new quarter panels, probably.?? maybe a rear boot floor panel.??

Kingo do you have a price for the rear floor panel as this looks bent too. would you be able to post up any exploded diagrams as to how the pannels come supplied? ie a parts list etc. something like THIS but for a Rav 4

I know its going to cost a bit and thats why I`m just hunting around for prices at the moment, these cars still sell for over 10k which is a lot more than I paid for mine over a year ago, and thats if you can find any (only 2 available in autotrader and wanted silly money).

The damage wouldnt make it a CAT A or B but it could still have some light chassis damage. It would all have been done through visual inspection, and the gaps on the doors/quarters leads me to think it has chassis damage, its an educated guess of an old trout who has spent 35 years in the job  but of course before you go getting any panels etc, you MUST determine what has happened to the chassis. It could be jigged and pulled out, I have seen very badly damaged chassis' pulled out, but its all these additional costs that will add up to a substantial amount of money

Prices are roughly

Quarters £258

Floor pan £211

Cross member £111

Crossmember £40

Tailgate £404

Then you have all the trims which can be expensive as panels! All prices plus VAT, I'm up to £1500 with just the basics above

Here are some drawings for you

You could always customise it into a 3 door!

My gut feeling is that the gaps around the top/bottom of nearside door would be difficult to get lined up properly.

I would ask a bodyshop for a price to repair and that you are paying it yourself. Maybe get a couple of quotes.

Then make the decision if its worth it. I've had repaired cars in the past and frankly they were nothing but bother.

Selling the car for parts might make you the same money as what its worth anyway.

Thanks Kingo just what I was looking for.

I hear what your saying about the trim etc, I could source these 2nd hand, looks like most of the trim is in good nick, how the 2 rear lights escaped damage i have no idea. I would just want the body work done correctly, hence new panels. I don`t usually go any where near crash damaged/repaired cars, but seeing as this was my vehicle and it was in A1 condition, I may take a chance. I`m also hoping as its all done by eye as you say, that the tech was having a lazy day and said " write it off" so to speak.

I`ve asked for the engineers report also, so this should tell me a bit more.

Bothwell-buyer: the thought had crossed my mind. Make it into a weekend off roader of some sort.

As for the parts side of it, If I did come to strip it, I think I could make a profit. I didn`t pay that much to buy it back.

The assessor would just have a palm/laptop to hand, type in the car details, tick the damaged panels/trims and hey presto would come up with the magic figure. I hear what you are saying about not costing much to buy back but I think you might be under estimating the amount of time/work involved in fitting a new floor, quarter panels jigging etc, it is a huge job

Kingo
