Hi I have a 2009 Rav SR 180, since new it has only averaged 32 mpg, at the 10,000 service I ask if they could check this and they said there was nothing wrong.

Last week I put in it in for it's 20,000 service and ask them to check that this valve ( is it a EGV valve ) was not blocked, again they said nothing found but they have downloaded the latest software into ECU and they said this might improve it.....however average fuel is now down to 28 mpg and I have flat spots below 2000 revs. I nearly have to changed into 1st gear at juntions or rev engine up before letting out clutch.

Is there anyone out there who has got 40 mpg as promised by toyota, I am not having a pop at Toyota I have had 2x Yaris and this is my third Rav I think they are a great car, but I am loosing faith can someone please advice ?

Welcome to the club.

I suggest you talk to Big Kev regarding fuel consumption as he has the same model as you.

However, as the flat spots have occured since the ECU flash, you should take it back and have another go at the dealer

Hi, In answer to your question - I own the T180 variant of the car you own. I assume that it is basically the same engine and set up etc as the SR180. There is no way even if you drive like "Miss Daisy" that you will achieve the figures claimed by Toyota. In reality i would set a bench mark of around 28mpg around town etc, and on a run around 33. You do find that they like to be "revved" (see the red line!) which is odd for a diesel! When i drive around the town i get better mpg by using lower gears 3rd&4th. The OBC (instant Average) is worked by some type of vacum, so when in 6th gear(which it will do around the town) it really is "sucking" through fuel! Don't worry too much as what you describe appears normal for this vehicle. Just enjoy the fact that it will probably last forever and they do seem to have a good resale value and they go like S**t of a Shovel!

The torque curve suggest that there is little point revving it above 2000rpm and indeed I rarely go above 1500.

As for the vacuum and the OBC - not heard that before!!!

Hi Ralph and welcome to Ye Olde Madhoose,

I am ashamed to say I have never actually done a manual check of my MPG,and that's me had the car a year. Ever since fitting Kingo's Chip Kit, bought second hand from one of Yorkshire's finest, I have enjoyed the extra power and flexiblity it has given to an already great engine.

Suffice it to say that I have thus far had the Trip Computer EASILY reading 46-48mpg, and even allowing for it being 20% off beam, I am happy to live with 37-40mpg, if that is what I am really getting.....time has come to check, methinks. I would add that at a steady 80-82mph, especially on cruise control, it totally plummets to 28-30 mpg very quickly.

As far as your flat spots are concerned, this is something which needs investigation and is not something mine has ever suffered from, both pre and post Kingo Chip Kit. If you get these probs sorted out, I can thoroughly endorse The Lindop Toyota Chip upgrade, which claims to help mpg also..... "driven with care...."

Regards,

Big Kev

Yeah you can. Did a test last week on a 60 mile trip. Brim-to-brim method. 60mph got me 45 mpg. Coming back, 70mph got me 40mpg. Anything faster and it drops like a stone. Around town gets 34mpg.

HANG ON A MO!!! when i drove your car you told me to hang on in third + feel the acceleration  which was very impressive incidently.. You rarely go above 1500rpm :o No wonder your Egr needed cleaning out every few miles :P I have seen other advice on here to keep a T180 below 2000 (for fuel economy) whats the point in shelling out £5000 extra for a performance Rav then pussyfooting about like a tortoise with leg irons on  Give it some stick they love it.. When Richard Hammond asked the makers of the Honda Atom how to achieve the claimed 0-60 time of 3secs he was told put it in 2nd gear Rev to 3,500 + let the clutch out  Stew

Have to agree with Marsky , its easy possible to get the aclaimed 40 mpg . Mine always reads around 38 - 40 mpg OBC and tank to tank method shows to be getting slightly more than that , strange i know as an OBC normally reads high not the other way round . Its done that since ive owned it for 1 year now

Got to say its the best car ive owned by far !!!!
