There have been issues with head gaskets on some models and EGR valves blocking, I'm sure if you do a search on 2.2 Avensis on here you should pull up a few threads

Kingo

Hi mate, I love mine and yes there have been a few problems with the issues mentioned (don't all cars have problems of one sort or another), the best advice that I can give you is buy one under 3 yrs old with up to date service history or if older make sure it has full Toyota service history then most major faults will be covered for 5 yrs or around 100,000 miles, Toyota are better than most in dealing with warranty claims. If you buy one from a Toyota dealer push them to give you and extended warranty then you will have some sort of peace of mind..

Happy hunting and best regards,Pete.

As with any modern common rail diesel engine, make sure that the injectors are ok, as they can fail and are VERY expensive to replace.

How is what done? Replacing the injectors? It's a very simple job but the injectors themselves are expensive.

I was quoted over £850 to supply and fit a set of 4 diesel injectors in my last car and it had only done 98k!
