4.2 Rims - Two Standard Tyre Sizes?

Hi,

Sorry if I'm repeating a previous topic, searches threw up many posts but nothing that seemed to exactly address my query.

I read here that the two standard tyre choices fitted to the RAV4 are 215/ 70/ 16 and 235 /60/ 16.

I'd like to know if both these sizes are interchangeable on the same rims as I'm looking for a second set of tyres for snow use but can't afford a second set of rims just yet and will need to swap them over between seasons.

I currently have 235 /60/ 16, but if possible would prefer to buy 215/ 70/ 16 or 215/65 R16 as a narrower tyre is better in the snow and ice.

Would the latter be a straight swap onto the standard rims?

Thanks.

Thanks for the useful post - I was thinking the same thing. Is there any reason that some models have one size and some the other? I recall something about some towbars not fitting?

Or you could just invest in a set of these for the winter....

:D

broadly speaking you can fit any wheel/tyre combo as long as it doesn't foul up on full lock, or when hitting bumps.

I run both my RAVs with 18" wheels. One has low profile tyres - 225/40 and the other is 245/45. Theres space to fit 20" wheels.

equally you could go for narrow wheels if thats what you want.

Profile aside, is the width of the stock rims the same or at least within the tolerances to fit both sizes of tyre?

I suppose the easiest test would be if the 'different' rims supplied on both versions of the standard car have the same part number. Anyone able to check?

I've been through Autodata to see if they'd need set up differently and the only difference under Wheel Alignment is in notes on "Dimensions" re: "Track - front/rear row" as you'd expect. For 235/60/16 it's 1525/1520mm and for 215/70/16 it's 1505/1495mm (is it a bit odd that 1520-1495 = 25??). Everything else appears exactly the same (to my eyes at least) so hopefully no post-swap fiddling required.

Ken Block's creation in that video is fantastic, he seems to have far too much fun. Look for the other ones of him racing a normal Subaru through a ski/snowboard fun park.
