Service/warranty Questions

Hello Everyone

My 2 year old Rav XTR is due for its second service.

I've been quoted £276 by my Toyota dealer is this the going rate?

What is Toyotas view regarding warranty when getting it serviced at a local garage which will probably be cheaper or even doing it myself and getting a friend who owns a garage to stamp my service book.I prefer the last option because my RAV is my pride and joy and I dont look forward to other people working on it who probably wouldn't handle it with the same tender loving care as I would.

Cheers

Alan

I will dig my service reciepts out later, but think my 2yr servce was about £220  I know at least 2 owners who service their own + have since new, and also managed to get their books stamped.. There is nothing forcing you to use MrT even whilst your rav is under warranty, however they supposedly look more favorably on claims out of warranty if you have a full toyota history, although i have not always found this to be the case, hope this helps  Stew

If you intend selling after (say) three years then put yourself in the shoes of the buyer -would you rather be looking at a Mr T service history or Joe's motors? If you take out an extended warranty from Mr T (ie after your three years is up(five from very recently)) , then I think you will need Mr T to service it from that point.

It pays to shop around. You'd think dealers would have fixed prices but I found with my mazda that they seem to vary quite a lot. I'd call your 3 or 4 closest dealers and get an idea before you commit.

If you look in the front of the service book you will see that according to European law, TGB will underwrite the warranty no matter who services it as long as it is done in accordance with the schedule. The trouble is that if your car is serviced at MR T, you will only get a semi-skilled lad working on it for your £90+VAT an hour. The qualified guys will be problem solving and doing more complex work. There are some good guys at the dealer, don't get me wrong but if you know a garage with somebody you trust that is where my business would go.

I service my own from new and it only goes back to the dealer for warranty work. I understand the logic behind a full service history but I would rather see it has been looked after properly. The next owner will know if it has been kept well.

Many Thanks once again for your helpful advice.

I'm planning on taking it to a local garage that's been recommended to me he will do service using genuine Toyota parts (Filters) for £90. Bit less than £276 Toyota wanted.

Cheers and best regards

Alan
