Hi Guys

Might be a daft question but has anyone else noticed that the silver paint on the gear knob on the 4.3 rav rubs off and leaves a sor of copper colour? Anyone replaced it?

Cheers

Yes, mine has started to do it. Will be awkward to replace with anything other than stock due to the reverse gear select mechanism

Ahh thank goodness I thought it was just mine, I wonder if you can paint them silver again?

If yours is just in warranty they will change it for you. Just in case.......

........if you drive with your hand on the gearstick you can bggr the synchro's.

Thanks Anchorman but mine is just out of warranty, I don't think I drive with my hand on the gearstick I do quite a bit of miles each week (about 600) so I think I must be just wearing it out!

Its easy enough to change;

Alternatively you could use a bit of wire wool and see if you can get a posh copper knob (pardon my French!).

How's that work then? Surely just resting your hand on your knob (ahem!) while driving is harmless?

The trouble is that in resting your hand on the lever you inevitably exert a force either forward or backward (your hand usually falls backward under its own weight). This tends to partially pull the gear into or out of mesh and that causes wear on the holding springs and cones. It can eventually result in it jumping out of gear which is a gearbox strip.

We have talked recently about the value of a service record but in my experience looking for clues is just as valuable in buying a second hand car. I would be discouraged if I saw a worn gear knob in an average mileage car more than not having a dealer history.

IMHO
