Gearbox Whine

I've noticed the last few days that when I'm in first gear and for most of second gear, there's a slight high pitched whine from the gearbox. I can't hear it in any other gear but I can hear it when I'm slowing down through the gears a bit and coasting.

Is this normal? I'm a bit concerned as I've read the Avensis suffers from problems with gearbox bearings but I'm sure I've heard this noise in other cars. I only noticed it because I had the radio off.

I want to make sure I get any problems sorted whilst it's under its 3 month warranty.

Hi mate, first thing to do is take it back and report the fault as it's not normal. For your info and anyone else interested I have included some info about the problem and the oil level and type.

Regards Pete.

My 2.2 diesels gearbox has the same problem... now i have had my motor to a gearbox specialist in Liverpool

and also MrT and they both recon its normal..the avensis box is a noisy box esp the 6 speed

having said all that check for the oil level etc

my mate in work has the same problem with his

infact i started a topic on this forum about this very subject a few months back

and i had a few people saying their motors were the same inc cars newer and with less miles on the clock than mine

Maybe i'm lucky then, but having been in the trade for years I don't consider a noisy gearbox normal unless it is a racing box with straight cut gears. I thought it was the older 5 speed box that had trouble, ie ... jumping out of 5th gear.

Anyway if you have had "expert opinions" then it should be ok but, did they say "they are all like" that or just some of them? For it to be normal they all should be noisy I would have thought anyway ..........

Regards Pete.

I've just been out in my girlfriends 2006 Micra with 30k miles on it and that has a whine/whiring noise in 1st through to 3rd too, it's even a little bit louder than my Avensis.

Maybe it is normal then? I wouldn't say the noise was really loud. I'm sure I've heard it in lots of cars though.

The toyota mech who rode in my avensis ...for a completly different reason than the gearbox

when i pointed out the whine from the box did say that was the norm

the noise is not a loud noise........ not intrusive but is just there mainly in 2nd when coasting in gear at low speed ie 3-5mph

I promised myself never to comment on gearboxes, because it's about the only thing I never dared taking apart...

But if you insist:

Make sure the oil level- and viscosity are correct.

Change the oil if that was a long time ago.

Period.

A gearbox is a highly complicated thing and a certain amount of noise from it is inevitable.

A large number of rotating metal parts are in direct contact with each other, only separated by a very thin oil film.

The slightest imperfection on one or more of the surfaces of the teethed wheels, wear of the bearings, or play between the groups, can lead to a variety of vibrations and noises.

Other factors are:

-Type of gears

-Quality Level

-Profile of Tooth

-Surface Finish

-Pitch

-Gear Runout

-Pressure Angle

-Gear Ratio

-Recess Action

-Resonance

-Modification of Profile

-Lubricant Viscosity

-Overlap Ratio

-Type of Bearings

-Backlash

-Gear Material

-Tooth Loading

-Housing

Etc.

Some of the reasons why I never touched them. :blushing:

Better bring it to a specialized transmission refurbisher if the car is worth it.

The more I listen to the noise the less I worry about it actually. It's more of a whirring than a whine I think.

If I'm revving highish in first or second and the noise can be heard, then I dip the clutch and the noise goes as the engine revs drop down. If it was the box wouldn't it carry on making a noise even with the clutch in?

I think I have a similar noise on my car although mine is an auto.

How long have you had your tspirit? I think its always the same when you get a new car, you start listening out for things and getting paranoid about things going wrong.

once you dip the clutch the noise goes because....

you are dropping the drive off the gearbox once the clutch is pressed
