T180 Head Gasket

Purchased my T180 in June this year, very proud owner of my 56 reg,Yew Green model.Had 49,000 on the clock. Now has 50,000.

Read about EGR problems, could not find any stickers for upgrading/flashing etc.Decided to take it back to the local Toyota dealership, where I had bought it.Very nice people, took it in,did the job. They also gave it a quick once over & informed me that they had found coolant sprayed around the engine compartment.System was over pressurized, could I book it in for them to check it out.

Today was that day,& I have been informed that I have a head gasket gone.Fortunately I received a 12 month warranty when I bought the car,so fingers crossed this problem should be covered. The worrying thing is that I bought the car mainly to travel around Europe, especially France, now that I have just retired from work.

Is this a common fault with this vehicle?Am I going to be driving with my head spinning, not knowing when a tyre pressure sensor light will come on,or another head gasket gives up the ghost. My limited French will not cope with it.I have a spare wheel, with sensor, but not a spare block. Please someone, put my mind at ease.

Yes it is certainly not uncommon but they will fit a modified gasket and different anti-freeze so you can rest assured it won't go again.

There are one or two bugbears with the T180 but as you have got the main one covered with the warranty the others are not unsurmountable.

Enjoy your car

Thanks for that, really love the car, just need some reassurance. The wife & I are really looking forward to our travels & I suppose that we were lucky to have a reliable dealership. They did not need to check the car over, when I first took it in.It could have developed into a major issue, if we happened to be in France.Hopefully got the other issue with the RFT covered as well.

Mon Dieu!! C'est la looking furward tu la trippe aroon France!!! Ah, bien!

I have a cousin in Shropshire..area. I think his in-laws are big in the eggs markets.

Anyway, as ancs says, I'd just give the car a good concentration of good antifreeze cos it can get cold in that foreign land at times of the year.

My older brother lives in Paris, and my niece lives near Cluny - so if you happen to break down anywhere near there, I can help!! Not that you will.

remember that the French drive on any side of the road. I think its either to do with a slipped beret or a patch over one eye. I think the gasket problem was that the previous stuff corroded the gasket material so not so much a big deal as a big mistake by some engineer/chemist.

If you break down, I can be in france from Glasgow with number 1 RAV in less than 8 hours (barring Traffic cops faltering my route which is unlikely due to government cuts).

One little note of some importance is that France is enjoying a revolt - the punters don't want to retire at 67 so all the civil service is going on selective strikes for weeks/months to come. Take a sleeping bag for two!

Sacre Bleu,Bothy,I thought the French had always been revolting. The wine is nice, though.Got 2 sisters who have got properties over there, keep asking us to go,so now that I have given up work, for a living,I`m going to take them up on the offer.Hopefully use them as a staging post & carry on to visit all the wonderful places in Italy. As long as the head gasket behaves itself & the RFT dont run flat.

Mr T phoned yesterday, said everything was going ahead as planned.By which I assume that TGB have given the go ahead to do it under warranty.Could have her back by thursday. What is the process of running her in?I take it I`ll have to keep the speed/revs down for a certain mileage. As for the French trips, seems like I have myself a professional translater, with Big Kev`s command of the French language.I could end up being in more trouble than a blown head gasket,or punctured RFT,in France. But now feeling a bit more relaxed about the situation.

There is no running in necessary. They are not changing bearings or pistons so drive it as you would normally.

Ohh Err - dunno what happened there. I was jus going to warn him to take his combs and a wooly pully - it can get pretty chilly in Cromer this time of year

Appreciate the concern but you can cancel the ambulance Kev
