Anyone Cure The Gearbox Clunk With New Gearbox Oil

Hi all.

I know this problem has been highlighted before, but not happening the same way as mine.

So a few questions if you don't mind...

'95 Toyota Celica 2.0 Gt Import.

1.Has ANYONE cured the gearbox clunk, just by changing the gearbox oil?

I don't want to flush the box first as this could disrupt whatever is potentially holding the internals together.

2.Automatic transmission oil has been suggested as this is thinner than the 75/90 gearbox oil, couldn't this a)overheat, b)offer less protection?

Basically I also have the "clunk" that a lot of people refer to, but mine only happens in 3rd, only when you engage 3rd quickly ( it's ok if you put it into gear slowly ), and it ONLY happens when the engine is cold, it is fine once it has warmed up???

Changing the oil has been suggested because the fact it is OK when hot, the oil is running thinner and smoother than when it is cold, hence the oil in it has thickened up over the past 8 years. I'd really like to know if anyone has cured the problem this way, as I know synchro replacements are a bit pricey.

3.If the oil was the problem, wouldn't it happen in all gears?

4.Lastly, can you mix transmission fluid and gearbox oil together - it HAS been suggested?

All help on any question appreciated,

Cheers,

DJC.

According to the Haynes manual you should change the gearbox oil every 2 years or 30,000 miles. What you probably have is a worn synchromesh which is why it only happens on third and why it improves when its hot (its like a tapered cone running inside another cone) Dont mix oils of different types NOT a good idea. Although auto oil does lubricate its also a hydraulic fluid because autos rely on oil pressure to change gear. If you want to try a different oil try REDLINE MTX. You normally need to buy it direct but I think Deemon Tweeks might be selling it now, beware though its expensive, probably cost you around £50.

Hi everyone

Had my 2 year old yaris serviced last Saturday. And they changed the clutch fluid and brake fluid and the gear charge is almost 100% better. The yaris t sport normally has a notchy gear change. But after the fluid change it's really smooth and slick to drive.
