Rav 4 Diesel 5Th Gear Vibration

Hello all

Last month I bought a second hand Rav 4 d4d gx (2003/04) diesel with 80,000 miles with full Toyota service history from new and noticed when driving home that when in 5th gear, and only 5th gear, there is a vibration through the gear lever.

It's a bit annoying!

Si I plugged in that in to Google and came here and found this idea here http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=104794

and when I read that I was very pleased so went about taking the gear knob off and dismantling the centre console which was a bit of a mare, put a rubber spacer on the right hand gear change rod, put it all back together and took the car for a road test.

Well, the gear lever still vibrates , a bit less i would say for sure, but still vibrates!

Any one else had this? It could be a syncro but does seem odd and am reluctant to go to Toyota because they may well say needs a new gear box or something which will be expensive

Yes, I seem to get it in other gears too if the engine is under load. Stops as soon as I touch the gear level. It's annoying but for now I just put the radio on to hide it. I assumed either the previous owner had rested their hand on the lever when driving and damaged the box, or as a design flaw the lever just sits too close to the trim somewhere. The trim may also have been refitted badly after a telephone car kit was removed. Might do as you have with the rubber one day but it's started getting super cold here so not just yet...

I have an 04 petrol rav with same problem, mentioned it to Toyota when it was in for service, they said could'nt hear anything. On service report they said gearbox had a wine and recommended strip and inspection......no thanks, I will turn up radio. only 50k on clock
