Tyre Wear Readings

Last safety report indicates that rear tyres are 6-6-6 but front tyre (Turenza ER30s) wear on both tyres is 2-6-2. I don’t know if or when front tyres were ever changed but mileage is approaching 35,000. I have driven the car about 5000 miles so far. Front tyres are being replaced tomorrow with Ecopia 300s.

Would anyone care to comment on how the front tyre wear came to be so uneven across the tyre ?

with readings like that I'd say they have both been under-inflated - probably for most of their life!

When you get the car back after the tyres have been changed, you should check the pressures when cold and ensure that they are at least at the levels stated in the handbook!

Thanks, jan&tone. That's just what I thought had happened.

Yes, underinflation. My car is similar though not quite as extreme. More like 464 across the front after 16k.

The recommended tyre pressures are on the sticker on the drivers door frame.

And as above - the correct pressures are on the door but at 36 (f) & 35 ® psi are slightly higher than the norm and you'll be surprised how many garages (main dealers included) just stick the pressure at 30 psi.

I'd always recommend you check the tyres EVERY time you come back from a service or other work on your car and always use a reliable guage to test them (ie not the knackered one at the supermarket garage!), as I've found the dealers have 'corrected' my pressure down to 30psi from the correct pressures!

Took car in for free MOT inspection at local T agents who replaced the two front tyres (with Ecopia 300s) that were now just below legal limit at 34+k.

Car then passed MOT with no problems. Returned the 2 miles to home (town driving) with an mpg reading of only 27 so checked new tyres’ pressure – only 30 ! (Thanks, you were right again Grumpy). Pumped ‘em up to correct pressures, rang T agent’s Service Manager to complain then drove another seven miles, again in town; mpg now up to 42 so improving slowly. Front tyres now read 8-8-8, rear 5-5-5.
