Supagard -Should I?

Read the advice on my wax thread and contacted a pro detailer who suggested Supagard. Said it would cost around £350 due to prep. work even though the car is nearly new, and would take a day. Is this a good move? I explained I wanted something to minimise dirt build-up.

When I bought my Gen3 I asked about Supaguard... my dealer reckons 'gard-x' is better and I went for that - mainly because I work near a salt water river and spend some time on the Isle of Wight ferry too!

No, a supaguard authorised detailer will try and sell that as the profit margins are huge but it is miss sold as it seems he tried to do to you.

I can put you in touch with a decent detailer that would charge far less and give your car a great protection, just need roughly the area you live.

Theres nothing to stop you polishing out the worst of the swirls and applying a sealant your self, its not difficult.

I wouldn`t recommend Supagard particularly but you can buy it on eBay for under a tenner :)

I opted for G-Techniq treatment (mostly C1 for exterior and other G-Techniq products for interior). KDS in Gillingham did it for £295 + vat. The car looks stunning, and I know he worked over 2 days applying it (it is usually left overnight to harden as it is a tough protection).

Beware though, Kelly at KDS knows his stuff and he found my brand new car had marred paintwork straight from the dealer (swirls cut into the paintwork/clearcoat by the PDI prep clean/wax). He took 22 pictures in the sunlight of the car which I presented to the dealership, but they were useless. This had to be corrected before the G-Techniq was applied because otherwise it would just lock in the damage. G-Techniq C1 is not a filler, it just protects (very well) the paintwork in its current state.

He did a bronze service paintwork restoration for me for £120+vat before the G-Techniq treatment and I have complained to Toyota about the state of the car as new. But I'm pleased with my decision to get it all done by a professional that cares about his work and reputation.

I have a Black Auris HSD and its still looking stunning after 2 weeks since the protection was applied, and I haven't even cleaned it once yet. Rain just runs down the windscreen without clinging to the glass. I'm going to give it a snow foaming this weekend (weather permitting) and a light shampoo, and will take some pictures.

I'm sure Supagard, A-Glaze, G-Techniq treatments are all good in their own right, but really the product is only 5% of the story, how the car is prepared and the treatment applied is 95%.

*edit* PS. This thread shows 5 replies but 0 views, how is that possible?

Toyota salesperson has to try and sell you Supaguard or some kind of sealant (it seems to be in the job description)! Trouble is, it is overpriced and they know it, so just say no. You will find the price drops drastically (just like gap insurance). They seem really desperate to sell it.

Also as Hou says, you can get a better job done by a specialist detailer for less so get some quotes. Or look into doing it yourself to save a bit more (although you might not be able to get the trade products).

YUP! My experience when negotiating my Auris purchase, and I'm a gullible type of womble.

To cut a long story short [situation no garage - parked outside] :--

Got - Free servicing for 3 years -

Free Supagaurd Protection for 3 years [inside & out & emergency repair kit to cope with bird strikes - vomiting children - pets excrementious accidents in transit, ect ect]

and a bunch of flowers for my wife [brownie points to Toyota for that, now I'll never realise my Aston

Martin dream].

Serious Stuff Now ;-- DO NOT use a car wash - hand wash is the best for preserving your paint/protection job.

Promise to report back in 3 years.

Ask a professional detailer, they will tell you it's all a con.

I was offered guard-x for nearly £400 by the dealer, I got the same stuff for £15 off of eBay and did the upholstery myself and just clean, wash and wax the car properly. The guard-x sealant from the kit is still in the garage on the shelf and I use a mix of Meguires, Poorboys and Chemical guys products.

Handwashing is just as dangerous as a car wash, especially on soft toyota paint. Never use a sponge, get a good lambs wool mitten (around £6) and use the two bucket wash method to avoid swirl marks trashing your paint.

www.elitecarcare.co.uk or www.cleanyourcar.co.uk are great sites for cleaning products, www.detailingworld.com for all the advice you could ever want or need for cleaning and car care advice.

detailing world has a lot of pro detailers on there, they can work miracles on swirled and marked paint and it's worth having a new car done to get it protected properly from the off.

I'd agree with Fluffmeister, that's good advice Monya.

I did some research on the Internet when I ordered my car, Guard-X is heavily overpriced from the dealer.

I found a local Detailer to come and work on my car instead, which included an application of Collinite No. 476S - Super Doublecoat Auto Wax. Worked a treat and the bill was only £60. :yahoo:

One of the advantages of NOT living in Lonson. I spoke to a detailer yesturday who wanted to apply supagard for £350 although he'd take most of the day in preperation. Still not convinced - this isn't a ferrari yet the price of the job would be much the same

hi all

i dont use a sponge or lambs wool mit, using these can trap grit etc under them and mark paintwork.

what ive used for years is a ultra soft handbrush.this pushes the dirt/muck etc off not rubbing it in to the paint.

and you can get into places like around door handles easier.you can reach further over the roof as well.

swill the brush out in clean water now and again.

as the man said IT WORKS FOR ME.
