60 Plate Aygo Black Leaking - With Pictures!

Hi all, new to the forum and to the Aygo.

Went ahead and got myself a 5 door Aygo Black MMT around a month ago. Had read the reports of leaks on here and elsewhere, but figured that it must be a small minority of cars affected (ie it's only the people with problems who post / moan about it) so went for it.

Great little car, couldn't be happier with it ... until this week I noticed a musty smell. Fearing the worst I had a good look round for leaks and found the carpet in the boot space was saturated.

dsc1170m.jpg

Sure enough, found there was about 2 inches of standing water in the spare wheel well

dsc1178r.jpg

Got it dried up best I can. I wonder if much of the water got in during a (very) rainy 200ml drive to Manchester I did recently ... but who knows how long its been getting in?

I took a bit more of the interior off to see if I could spot where the water could be getting in. Gave it a good going over with the hose, and water seems to be getting in where I've marked with an arrow, when the hose was directed at the left side rear light cluster ... so guess that's where the leak is (if not elsewhere as well).

dsc1180c.jpg

This next picture is what has me the most worried. Because to me, that looks like ... RUST.

This is a 4 week old car. Not on. Does anyone else think that looks like rust, and should I demand a replacement vehicle, or give them a chance to fix it?

Thanks for all your help.

Sorry to see the problem with your Aygo. There is a thread on here from a few weeks ago. My wife's 2009 Aygo was full of water in the rear footwells - and so were 2 of her friends Aygos (all 3 door models 07,09 & 10 reg)

It is currently in at the Toyota dealer having this fixed under warranty.

They claim it is the door seals, which they are replacing along with the carpets, but not the case on your car as the boot is soaked.

There are reports of leaking through the rear light seals, door seals, upper brake light seal......

I would take the car right back to your Toyota dealer along with your photos and they will sort it out under warranty - you are also going to need new carpets - but be warned some cars that they have 'fixed' have still leaked afterwards.

There is a time limit of (I think) 6 weeks from new to reject the car. You are probably well within your rights to reject the car altogether because of this - If I were you I would phone your local Trading standards office and they will tell you.

Iam sorry to say Toyota quality is not very good these days. We have 4 new Toyotas in our family and 3 have had problems!

Hi CHN.... sadly this is one of the list of faults my daughter's Aygo suffered from but it affected the footwells. The doors seals, the door membrane and the carpets were all changed and then the secondary door seals were fitted and I think this cured the problem. The sieve like problem with water getting in was one of the reasons she sold her car a few months back.

As for those brown marks.... I doubt it is rust yet but I rather think it might be a protective wax.... try wiping it to see if it can be shifted.

No matter what you find the work is all covered by warranty.... give the dealer a rocketing but in a polite manner and make then clear the faults.

Good luck thumbsup.gif

I think it generalises a bit too much to say "Toyota quality isn't good"... but it's such a shame to see that these leaks are still happening. I'm so thankful that I haven't had to deal with this problem, it seems to be a bit of a random gene with Aygos! It doesn't look terribly like rust to me, but you should probably get it inspected, see what they can do... they may offer you a partial refund perhaps, if they manage to fix/modify the car?

Keep us updated... bear in mind that some Toyota dealers are better than others in terms of customer service - if you don't get what you want from your main dealer, try somewhere else and then go straight to Toyota UK. You'd have thought Toyota would have this problem fixed by now, especially considering 107 and C1 don't suffer!

Poor Aygo :(

Sorry to hear of your problems. I know its no consolation that you have a 5 year warranty - but Toyota really should have gotten to grips with this with the facelift of the car. I don't think you can reject it, however you must give them an opportunity to remedy the situation and warn them that if it should re-occur, you will be looking to reject.

I think good on you for having taken such good pictures.

So much water! Not good :( I'm sure your Dealer will sort it, but this should not happen in this day and age.

It appears the Japanese processes of continual improvement haven't reached the Aygo line yet.

I suspect the rust is residue off the spare wheel, rather than the boot floor rusting.

Hello,

I am really sorry to hear of your problems. I bought my first card in August of this year. I have a Aygo Black. Just before I bought the card I read online about the problems with leaks. I discussed this with the dealer and he assured me that this problem has been solved. Its sad to hear that it has not in your case.

Rejecting a car is not a simple straightforward thing to do. I have commented several times on the processes required, but to para phrase, you can't just reject goods, you have to give the seller the chance to put things right. The time frame to look at is 6 months, from 0-6 months, you don't have to prove the goods were inherrantly faulty, but after 6 months, it will be down to you (and at your expense) to prove the goods were inherrantly faulty from new. You should send a report to the Dealer Principle, stating FACTS with pictures, in a recorded delivery letter, explaining everything, including the option of rejecting the car. As always, be FIRM but POLITE and agree a timescale when you want the work completed to your full satisfaction. Keep the DP informed by recorded delivery letter every time the car is off the road or where you have to take it in for inspection, in fact, any contact you have, you should record the dates and times in a log

All this will be covered under warranty and I'm sure will be completed to your satisfaction, but whatever you do, start the ball rolling today!

SALE OF GOODS ACT Part 5A, 48B is probably a good starting point ;)

Kingo

The trouble with the Aygo is that it is not built by Toyota

Yeah but the Citroen and Peugeot versions don't appear to suffer from such leaks

Maybe the leaks problem is a French ploy to increase the sales of the C1 and the 107

Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TPCA) in Czech is managed and run by Toyota to Toyota standards. The Aygo,107 and C1 use 92% the same parts. Front and rear panels are the main differences. It beggars belief that Aygos continue to leak and I am now glad I could not get an Aygo MMT and had to settle for a 107 2tronic. In fact the engine and gearbox are identical and it is the MMT box in the 107.

In Portugal the sales and service of Peugeots is very poor compared with Toyota who do try harder.

No modern car should leak and perhaps leaking Aygo owners should make more of a fuss and start rejecting such vehicles.

Surely you could try taking your 107 to a Toyota dealer next time? After all, they're the same parts if you ever need anything doing, same mechanicals, service intervals etc. Then you could have the Toyota service and escape Peugeot's aftersales (although I have to say there's a Peugeot dealer near me who seem to be very pleasant indeed)... :)

I will repeat TOYOTA QUALITY IS NOT VERY GOOD THESE DAYS in fact it is very poor!

My Wifes 2009 Aygo had new front door seals replaced and now the front footwells are soaking wet (the back ones which were soaked before the warranty work was done are dry) To cap it all both of our 2009 Yaris' rear parcel shelves have fallen apart where they are velcroed onto the back seats - the glue has disintegrated...common problem the Toyota dealer told us - they have ordered new parcel shelves without even looking at the cars - and we have a recall on our IQ.

I truly hope you got this fixed.

First off remove one of the plastic grommets from the spare wheel well, this will stop the water building up and rusting the spare wheel, I would then look at the high level brake light, just give it a little press to see if it seals tighter to the bodywork, if yes ask dealer to look at that as a fix for your leak.

UPDATE - Thanks for all your helpful replies.

Have the car back from Toyota now - had to wait a while for a courtesy car. The fault was traced to an air vent behind the rear bumper which was apparently fitted incorrectly and not flush. Has been replaced with a new vent now and apparently problem solved - I'll have my fingers crossed that it is anyway.

I think someone else on these forums had a similar problem - if not, one more to add to the list of leak locations!

The vents behind the rear bumper are a known problem.

Glad you've got it fixed. It must be a real headache for the guys at Toyota as well - every time they get a call with the words "my Aygo is leaking", they must want to cry... I don't envy their position. Shame you had a wait for a courtesy car, but at least you're all fixed up and ready to go and hopefully you can now enjoy your Aygo properly! Good luck with it :)

we have the same water leak / condensation problem the car is booked in at the dealers for a 3rd time. Its had its new door seals, dry & valet but still leaks. If its not fixed we will get rid of it. Its a shame as we really like the car - this is its only problem its had.

If it doesn't get fixed, you could always change to a Peugeot 107 or Citroen C1 - they're basically the same car but they just don't leak! Hopefully it won't come to that... hopefully they'll get it right this time! Best of luck :)

According to their forums the 107 and c1 leak just as much.... Having said that ours hasn't leaked yet, just icy inside the windscreen this morning which obviously melted and hopefully has evaporated!!

I had the same problem with my 10 reg Aygo. The water was I thought coming in somewhere on the left rear of the boot space. Took it back to the dealer, Vantage Toyota Knaresborough and they sorted it. The dealer said that it was the vents behind the numberplate. I can't see them but they fixed the fault quickly and are a pleasure to deal with.

Posted

These vents are behind the plastic bumper and can't be seen from either out- nor inside...

I am sorry but your statement is not correct the number of leaks on 107 and C1 forums is minimal.
