Extra Warranty?

Got a three month warranty with my new to me Rav4, and looking like it'll get hammered as had the "Engine management light" on with normal diesel acceleration, and scary fuel consumption :o The warranty is in Lancashire and I'm up in Aberdeen, took it to the nearest dealer who pronounce the fuel pump needs replacing etc. Now I can't expect that's going to be cheap, so does anyone have any recommendations for a warranty after the 3 months one ends?

I suspect it is the SCVs not the fuel pump. About £200 from Kingo

Ive never known a pump go, injectors go out of spec easily, but as AM says, more likely to be SCV valves. PM me to order a set

As for warranty, could you get a Toyota one? I have had bad experiences with aftermarket warranties which are basically insurance policies and their pay-outs often don't cover the cost of the repair. I had a gearbox go kaput some years ago (not a Toyota), cost £1800, received £500 from the warranty provider. Or would have done, had they not gone into receivership the day before.

Thanks for the offer

I'm off back down from Scotland at the weekend for the supplying dealer to fix under their warranty, not happy at the drive, but the warning light seems to not like the cold, ie on in the morning, off in the afternoon!

One other query, can a car dealer give only 3 months warranty?

I know that the "warranties" are in reality an insurance, just wondering if their's any good ones about. Good being you pay a realistic premium and then they don't try and get out of any claim on a technicality etc.

A 3 month warranty on a used car is considered the minimum in law. Whoever you bought the car off should have at least given you some options to extend it. You don't say how old your RAV is??? You can buy an extended warranty from Toyota providing the car is within certain age/mileage limits. Off the peg warranties can be troublesome, they are insurance policies with a list of parts covered, they must FAIL as in stop you from useing the car, if you get say a wheel bearing that is humming you would not be able to claim as it has not failed. Toyota extended warranty is just that, an extension of the manufacturers warranty and will be far far better than any off the peg rubbish that gets sold. They are expensive, but the cover is superb

It's a 2005, 55 reg with just over 28 000 miles on the clock. I've updated my profile

In that case you should be able to buy an extended warranty. Email us at LINDOP TOYOTA and somebody will get back to you with prices/options etc. Please leave a phone number, Reg number etc on the contact form

The SCV's got replaced, which cured the warning light (possibly as it wasn't always on and the fault wasn't always there).

But, trying to accelerate up the ramp onto the motorway, no acceleration worth talking off, an instability, like the car wanted to go faster, it tried to, succeeded for a millisecond only for it to be signalled to cut the fuel back, so next junction back to the dealers :crybaby:

Back into the workshop and a few minutes later a dodgy earth was stated as being the problem. Sure enough, starting now on the first turn of the key, and acceleration like normal, AND no warning light :yahoo:

Re Warranties:

The independent dealership warranty that came with mine this month is so impotent it may as well be written on the back of a rice-paper stamp floating down a stream.

I've since taken one of those third party warranties from a firm publicised in various motorising magazines and newspapers, it came in at under £300 for 13 months. I understand they'll try to weasel their way out of anything and everything, but all insurance policies are the same. On paper it seems rather comprehensive and various 'optional' components were included during the course of negotiations over the phone - I think everything except the catalytic converter is now on the list.

This is the first time I've ever tried one of these policies, but my last car had two alternators fail within a year and this time I wanted peace of mind against the Turbos, DMFs, and other 'big issues' I've read about with these ones.

If you decide against Toyota then give me a shout and I'll pass on some hints for getting a better deal from the group I used.

n.b. No doubt Parts-King can do better, but the official Toyota warranty prices are available here: http://www.toyota.co.uk/bv/1024downloads/Toyota_Warranty_PL.pdf
