I've a few longish winter trips coming up which will involve drives through the Cairngorms and south of France in the depths of winter. I'm not too concerned about getting stuck or anything, but thought it might be an idea to carry a few litres of fuel with me, think 25litres as a backup in case the worst should happen, or the French should run out of fuel. Anyone any experience with the cans and a make and model to buy? Can I legally carry petrol in the car in a can etc etc?

Not certain on this but I seem to think there is a legal limit to the amount of petrol you can store in the UK

If France run out of fuel you would probably be mugged for it or maybe arrested as a smuggler  :D :D

Just found this on tinternet

The Petroleum Spirit (Motor Vehicles etc.) Regulations 1929 and the Petroleum Spirit (Plastic Containers) Regulations 1982 limit the amount of petrol that can be kept in a domestic garage or within six metres of a building (e.g. most domestic driveways). The limit is a maximum of two suitable metal containers each of a maximum capacity of ten litres or two plastic containers (which have to be of an approved design) each of a maximum capacity of five litres. These limits also apply to any containers kept in a vehicle parked in the garage or on the driveway (but not to the internal fuel tank of the vehicle

I'm fairly certain most (but not all) Ferry companies will not allow fuel cans on board whether full or empty and will take them off you if found.

Check the terms and conditions before you travel.

This lot reminds me of the refinary blockage we had. Wasn't there a story then of somebody allegedly keeping petrol in a wheelie bin?

Almost a candidate for the "Darwin Awards" I think:

The rules(?) for the chunnel only allow either 2 off 5 litre plastic containers max, or 2 off metal ones of 10 litres max.

I don't know if you can mix n match, IE 2x5 and 1x10 litres, but the total allowed is 20 litres

hope this is of some use to someone.

shcm, that link was great,thanks

Del.
