Engine Knocking

Hi, I have an 2003 Avensis T4 1.8L, which had the engine management warning light come on some 3/4 years ago. The Toyota dealer replaced the sensor and said that the problem may be due to excessive oil comsumption, of which there was a service fix. They measured the oil level and I had to take it back a month later. On checking the oil they said it had dropped and reported it to Toyota who said that the usage was not sufficient at that time to warrent the modification. We had heated words because if the excessive oil consumption was affecting emmisions then they should fix the problem, but no joy. I now have a slight knocking from the engine especially when cold and I think that a big end may have worn. Reading other members comments, there seems little joy in Toyota relacing the engine as I did not return to them for sevicing, but to do it myself. Looking on the web, there are several additives that say they can improve oil consumption and coat bearing surfaces to reduce wear. XADO and AMETCH are the ones I am looking at.

Have any Toyota members had experience of these and can they offer advice with my problem?
