Car won’t start check list.

Gas---Air---Spark

What does it do.

When you turn the key on, do you hear the fuel pump?

Do you hear a clicking sound?

Does the starter turn the motor over?

Do any dash lights come on?

Cough’s but wont start.

Meaning the starter motor is spinning the motor, do you hear the motor pop or sound like it tried to fire?

For The Most Part.

If the motor fires but will not stay running.

There is a fuel delivery problem. The motor firing shows there is spark.

Dirty Air filter can cause a car to start and then die also. But if the air filter is clean for the most part the air filter can be ruled out.

Back to fuel delivery problem.---that’s why I asked about hearing the fuel pump. If you can hear the fuel pump, then the next guess is fuel filter.

If pump and filter are fine start thinking about the injectors.

If the motor turns over but never tries to fire, time to check for spark.

If all the above is fine…..the dreaded vacuum leak may be the problem. Dreaded because they can be hard to find. You have to listen for a whistle or sucking sound. Of course with so many other things on the car…….I can’t cover them, it's just a Quick check list.

Oh, I almost forgot if the starter won’t spin the car motor and no dash lights come on…the Battery is dead.
