Engine Stops When Hot.

Hi there. My engine, Avensis 1,6. petrol 1999 4A-FE has got a problem. When cold, it starts without a problem. As soon as it has reached the working temperature, the engine cuts, and will not atart again until cold. There is no spark after it stops. The yellow engine trouble lamp is on, but no trouble codes are present. I suspect the distributor. Does anybody know how the ignition coil is feed, is it via a switch in the distributor, or from the ECU. Looking forward to some good hints.

What you describe is typical HT ignition coil failure. I suggest you check the resistance values of both the primary and secondry windings first when cold and then when hot and then compare the values.

hello

i'd check with distributor first. this one is heated with engine and surrounded by hot themperature. what then? the distributor must to have a capacitor and own contact wire -- if this contact is losen due to high themp - this might to lead to the same issue you have had. another issue might be with electrical contacts inside the same distributor.

if engine is well started in cold condition -- it means all system is in order. try to check with el contacts.

cheers/Igor
