The mobile tyre fitter has just been to my house. Cut tyres off my back wheels, cut bands off and fitted normal valves and Hankook tyres. £240. Who says there isnt life after run flats

Follow up to my two posts above.

I fired off a complaint email to my local Beadles Toyota dealer regarding the fact they wouldn't remove my BSR and put a 'standard' tyre back on. Surprisingly i received a call the next day from the After sales manager who was willing to discuss the issue. He told me i wasn't the first to complain and he agreed that the wheel on my T180 is the same as the SR which doesn't have the BSR fitted. Therefore he agreed there was no reason why a T180 can't run without the BSR. He couldn't authorise his staff to remove them though as he would be going it alone, out on a limb without the backing of Toyota and he simply can't do this. He also suggested Toyota as a company wouldn't authorise this as it would be admitting there was a floor in the design and therefore leave itself exposed. So although it was nice to discuss the matter this has been of no help to me.

He also made the point that the XTR and SR180 have the compressor and puncture repair kit which doesn't come cheap and aren't that great anyway so 'run flats' are technically a better solution. I agree with this in principle but with the costs involved in replacing a tyre and the lack of dealers that actually have the equipment it is a seriously floored system. I thought this before i had my puncture but now £700 lighter for the privilidge do you think i have changed my mind?

Right, i'm off to write to Toyota UK now. More time wasting i'm sure.

Just get a grinder and cut them off OR get a local tyre garage to do it for you. You can buy a Ring tyre compressor for £15 and a puncture repair kit for about the same, or pop a spare in the boot. Stuff Toyota pal. Like I said eralier, I had the local mobile tyre guy come to my house, cut the support bands off and fit 2 brand new Hankook tyres for £240. Why pay Toyota £700?????

Just had my front two support rings removed and new Bridgestone duellers fitted at a local tyre specialist...£355 all together...only charge half hour labour per corner.

Pretty pleased with the price.

Purely on a personal note, come the time when my Bridgestone runflats are due to come off the car, along with the Bridgestone steel ring system, the replacement tyres will have any number of name choices on them, but it certainly won't be Bridgestone.....why encourage a company's product into the marketplace, who entered into a moneyspinning CARTEL type arrangement with Toyota which worked so well it was binned at the first opportunity / model change...?????

Wasn't sure about alternatives, not enough time to research. At £160 each fitted, it was a pretty reasonable price compared to even ordering them off the internet.

Didn't want budget....didn't want to pay more either!!

The guy at Gates Tyres suggested that if I got another 24K miles on them, then they can't be that bad.

Hello boys!

I'm a new member on this list. What should I do?

I have a Rav4 T180, the tyres it has now are 225x65x17 (the last owner changed the original 235x55x18 tyres)

I want to change the tyres because the winter is coming.

- Should I keep the size 17" wheels and get run flat winter tyres (225x60x17 Pirelli w210 sottozero)?

- Should I keep the size 17" wheels and get normal (not run flat) winter tyres?

- Should I change them back to the original 18" wheels and tyres?

Which is the better solution?

At the moment the yellow light (that is responsible for the tyre pressure) is flashing constantly. How do I make it stop?

One more question: What are support rings?

Thanks a lot

Jozsef

Jozsef.

Support ring is the BSR (Bridgestone Support Ring). This is the black metal/plastic ring that fits round the inside of the T180 18" wheel rim so if the tyre is flat it runs on this therefore protecting the allo from damage. The trouble is only Toyota and very few places have the equipment to remove this which is the reason for this problem / discussion we are all having. If you're happy with the 17" wheels then it's entirely up to you what tyres you want to put on. I guess run flats are best as you have no spare and assume the Pirelli you mention are like most cars with the run flat part of the tyre being in the wall. I don't know enough about them to recommend them or not though. I'd be reluctant to go back to 18" if i were you as it will cost a small fortune purchasing the wheels. Personally though it has to be 18's, just wish they were 19"

Thanks for the answer, I think that the money will decide this.

i would take on the normal tyres (I have been driving for 30 years, but I never had a puncture) but the yellow flight would flash in front of me every time I drive.

Whilst I sympathise with your plight, it has nothing to do with going it alone etc etc

We live in a letigious world, the RAV T180 type approval was issued with run flats, it is the vehicle type approval that is the main issue, in a court of law, the dealer would be deemed "The expert" and should anything ever happen in the future, your dealer would be responsible for removing a system that was there when it gained type approval. This might not affect you in any way shape or form, BUT you could sell the vehicle on and a future owner would have no idea you have removed the runflat system, leaving the dealer open to being sued. So, whilst it might be possible to do, your dealer (or tyre shop for that matter) would be liable. In a world of no win no fee, it would not suprise you to know that dealers are very careful when offering safety critical advice, just like offering advice on brakes or anything else, genuine parts / systems would be the advice

Hi everyone

Can I get a quick picture of what people have paid for Bridgestone BSR replacement on the Toyotas that have them, and where they got it done?

stevenson

ps - I have read this thread, I know that many people recommend removal. There is no need to repeat that. Custard pie for anyone who does!

Hello mates!

I have a question.

Can you switch off the TPMS from the onboard computer(T180)?

I don't like that light always flashing on the dashboard.

Cutting the pink wire isn't a solution.

Does anyone have an idea?

Thanks

Jozsef

Hey

After speaking to several dealers and the tech guys on here (Ancs and Schm) i think you will find the only soloution is cutting the pink wire. it IS a reversable process and a 5 min job. It stopped my light flashing so in my book IS a soloution.

Cut the wire?

This is a drastic solution.

Ok thanks very much. :)

Or do as was suggested to me by wise old Marsky....put a switch in circuit to retain its availability....?

yeah pop a switch in BUT your still gonna have to cut the pink wire :D lol. 2 min job to reactivate the TPMS wheather you fit a switch or not, but yeah a swith will save a minute or two and if you position it down behind the door pillar you wont have to take the instrument pod off when you want to reactivate it.

If the ring(s) need done, Dale, it's because THEY DAMAGE THE GUBBERS when removing the tyres. I could box up a couple and send you to have in your car so that they are in "stock" for such an eventuality...? shop that tyre price about too...shocking....mine came off for normal tyres and never looked back.
