What Size Of Tyre Can I Go To?

At present the wifes Rav has 235 65 16 KUHMO's on OE alloys, we are looking to purchase a set of tyres with a decent tread for winter use up here, unfortunately the range of tyres in that size is poor.

Can I go up to say a 70? I understand the speedo will read slightly out and I will need to buy 4 to keep everything running true but is there any clearance issues?

On this forum, if you do a search there is a link giving comparisons of wheel /tyre combination to compare for speedo purposes.

I am sorry I can't say much about your model - but on the 4.1, I did have a slight problem with the front tyres scuffing the wing on full lock, using TSW alloys.

On my number 1 RAV, I have 18" wheels with 225/40x18 tyres and the car looks daft...in that I could take the wheel diameter up to 20" and still have wheel room.

Its going to depend a bit on the tyre type - eg how chunky it is and tread pattern/shape. Unless you go to an alloy wheel specialist, then I doubt any tyre shop would really know what would fit...apart from folk on here who have already done it - so lets hope someone has!

Another way would be to try a used tyre on one of your wheels and see how much clearance there is...a tyre shop would only charge you the fitting/swapping cost by using a tyre, for example damaged/unuseable....so obviously you don't drive with it.

First though check out the tyre sizes available for the type of tread you want.

I should have said that I use DARE Drift alloys on both now. Gives me a wider track and they are much lighter than any OE alloys.

Try putting the details into this website...

http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

Very helpful in that it tells you the overall height of the tyre and percentage change.

yes very helpfull  i would also like a more aggresive/offroad type tyre and there arent many in the correct size. using your link i found the best match to be a 215/65/16 its nearly an exact match whereas the 235/70/16 is alot bigger.

you can get a general grabber AT2 in 215/65/16 which is the sort of thing i would like, but, just need to know if a 215 will be ok ????????????

Aggressive tread won't help that much. As long as you have decent tread, then it's the trye compound that makes the difference.

If snow compacts into aggressive tread where the tyre compound can't flex and push out the snow, then you will just spin on the snow/ ice. You need a compound which bites into the snow/ ice and disperses it.

In the past, high street fitters have tried to sell me summer tyres with aggressive tread for snow and ice conditions, even though I already had the same fitted. The difference after fitting proper studless snow tyres is amazing.

The original RAVs came with a Dunlop 215/70x16 tyre...apparently made for the RAV at that time.

I fitted a very heavy tread tyre to the landrover for serious off-roading. Helluva noisy on tarmac tho.
