Smoky Exhaust

Wondered if anyone else has suffered from this.

My 2.0 ltr VVTi Avensis (Y reg) will on occasion blow pale brown smoke from exhaust when started in the morning.

It also does it (more often), if I drive it quite hard just as I change gear. I need to be doing about 4500/5000 rpm for it to happen.

Now I can hear a lot of you saying -"well don't rag it quite so much."..but as it is 16V, I believe it's power band is about 4500-6000, and it's nice to suprise the odd BMW.

I have mentioned it to the dealers but surprise, surprise, they say the emmisions are OK and deposits can build up in the exhaust !??

I think I'm right in saying its Direct Injection - wonder if this has any bearing?

What has backed my suspicions up about it not being normal, is that it needed a replacement catalyst at about 60K...could it be that excessive crap has been forced through it to the point of failure?

There is constantly a smooth black sooty lining on the inside of the exhaust and I think my consumption is pretty poor. If I pretend I have an imaginary caravan behind me, I can get 40+mpg, but 80mph on the m/way returns about 28/29mpg.

Anybody else experienced similar??

Never heard of brown smoke b4? Yes you should have a D4 16v VVTI direct injection engine but dont think the direct injection would course anything to smoke? Only thing i can think of is a gasket has gone? :ffs: :censor:

Also seeing this on my 1.8 VVTi Y Reg with 29000 miles. Smoke starts off as you say a light almost white colour when cold but mine does produce some black smoke when hot and revved. Oil consumption is at one pint about every 900 miles - worse than when it was new. Dealer says anything up to a litre per 1000 miles is ok. Anyone know if that's reasonable? Thanks.

Black and brown smoke usually means fuel smoke! but usually the cat should clean that!

i work for a Toyota Dealersip and ive replaced alot of heads on VVT-i's due to oil consumption even though toyotas limits of oil consumption is a litre every 1000 miles! They say that to save on warrenty costs!

Thanks for the reply. Any info on what the problem is with these heads? A litre every 1000 miles seems an awful lot of oil. I've never had an engine use that much in over 20 years of owning cars. I'm hoping the exhaust emmissions are ok - need an MOT very soon.

I think the fault with the heads are valve seating and stem problems, but i wouldnt quote me on that! Some issues Toyota like to keep to themselves.

I do agree that it is alot of oil! i used to put a litre of oil in my Hillman Imp every 5000 miles! and that car was never used kindly if u know what i mean!
