Hi I've just had the same problem and went to Toyota with all the information I had off the internet but they said they knew nothing about it.

After a week they have realised this is a common fault and have sent it to the claims department to see if Toyota will pay for the repairs.

If anyone that has had this problem could get in touch then maybe we could Toyota to do a proper recall so this problem can finally get sorted!

Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Charlie,

Have you had any luck with your claim?

I also have the same problem. Toyota are saying I need a new ECM and gearbox. When I asked about making a claim to Toyota they said that I have to pay for the work first (£3500!!!!) then try and make a claim after. However toyota service man said that the chances were slim.

PS Toyota found some metal fragment in the gearbox oil. Does this really mean new box? I've heard this can be quite normal and until this fault happened with the ECM the gears shifted fine.

Thanks

Hello everyone.

Guess what my 2002 Rav4 auto VVTI Petrol has just developed the same symptons, noisy gear change and slipping

in 1st & 2nd gears. Only just happened after hitting 80k miles but decided to look on forum for any advice and found out I too have bought a defective RAV.

I have the added difficulty as the car was bought in the UK and now resides in Spain, on Spanish plates, so do not

really know who to contact have sent an e-mail to Toyota Europe but probably won't get a reply.

We have a local garage who can run a diagnostic report but the main Toyota dealer is miles away and I run the risk of damaging the gearbox traveling there only to be told there isn't a problem, it will need new ECU and gearbox etc.

It seems my least expensive option is to let the local garage run a diagnostic report and whip out the ECU and then send it to either the UK or the USA for repair.

Do I need to take extra care when removing the unit for static or will disconnecting the Battery suffice. Also when replacing the ECU is there any special codes needed to restart the engine or immobiliser or any other electronic gadget. Do I need to disconnect the ECU to see the number on it or does it appear anywhere else on the VIN plate etc.

I thought when buying a Toyota I was buying reliability but it appears any car I own ends up with a major problem.

Don't ask ! Maybe if enough people contact Toyota through a third party like the BBC Watchdog programme as this seems to be the only way corporations listen to people.

Thanks for your help.

I dont know if this will help anyone! But this is an item for sale off Fleabay...

You are bidding on a new, genuine Toyota ECU purchased 22/06/2011

This unit was purchased from a Toyota Parts Supplier for my 2002 Toyota Rav4 petrol, automatic.

The unit is in the original, unopened box, as seen in the photograph.

Part number 89661-42683 replaces 89661-42681 & 2.

This ECU was not used as the problem on my car was a worn Transmission Valve Block and a damaged gearbox.

The parts supplier will not take returns on Electrical Equipment so I offer this for auction.

Toyota Dealer quoted £951.24 inc VAT,

I paid £720.62 inc VAT and will supply original invoice to verify cost.

Item number: 150630257840 £250 (With reserve) atm...

Thought I'd post it on here rather than the eBay finds section

Hi,

I just got my ECU back from ECU Testing UK and the problem with AT is basically the same as before.

They claim that I have to take my car to the dealer for 'gearbox adaptations reset'.

Did any of you do it after getting ECU from repair?

Thanks,

Mik

Yeah but those who sent to the guys in Brooklyn got a working ECU back virtually by return and don't seem to have any further reported problems

Not aware of others having used them.....................

The Brooklyn boys have had such good recommendations.

Anyway, with Bitman's information, let's hope you are back on the road ASAP

OK and here is the end of the story:

I called them after resetting ECU at Toyota (which proved complete waste of almost £80) and sent the unit back.

Next day they told me that they did not find the fault this time, but rebuilt the ECU software anyway.

Module came back and it was fine straight away (apart from some adaptations learning which was fine).

So I am not sure if they missed something when repairing it first time or... I don' know.

Works fine now!

hi just received my ecu back from ecu testing and exactly same symptoms as u slams into reverse and slipping into gear feel conned by above company

any advice you could give me would be good especially this adaption learning what you do exactly and also was there any mention about this gearbox reset rubbish before you sent your ecu as all i got was instructions in box but will work perfectly fine as new is what they said no mention of taking 200 plus pound and still got to go to toyota.

many thanks

tom

No, they never mentioned the need of going to Toyota before I sent the unit (which is a bit...hmm).

If reverse gear is being engaged harshly it is not a question of re-adapting - your ECU just has not been fixed.

I am afraid you have to contact them and send the unit back to them (which is pain!)

Hello,

After reading posts on this thread I sent my ecu to ECU-Testing (2004 Rav4 XT4).  Car shows typical symptoms of pulling off in wrong gear and 'clunking' into gear. They've come back to me today to say that they are unable to test it. Seems there are some models of ECU that cannot be hooked up to their rig.Just wondering if anyone else had this, or what my next steps are from here?  Am I able to buy a replacement ECU and just plug it in?  The model number on my unit is: 89661-42A30

Any advice very much appreciated 👍
