Avensis Verso Diesel 2002 Power Problems

Hi all,

I am new to this website so I hope I am following the correct protocol by starting a new post on my problem.

I really hope someone can give me some advice as the repairs have been very expensive so far and yet the problem has not gone away.

The story so far...

My car is a 2002 avensis verso diesel with 130k miles on the clock.

Basically what happens is that suddenly and without warning, the car loses power and the engine light comes on. Each time I was in fourth gear and driving at about 70mph, 2000rpm, going up a gentle hill. I've pulled in, switched off the engine, waited a moment or two, switched it back on and the car is back to normal and the light is off(I have been lucky so far that no other car was behind me). It has happened five times in two months and is very scary as I have young children.

I brought it to the Toyota dealer and they told me the EGR valve needed to be replaced. (Does anyone know if the egr valve on this model can be cleaned or does it have to be replaced??). A few days after this was changed, I experienced the same problem - ie loss of power, engine light on. I brought it back to Toyota who told me it now needed a new VRV valve (vacuum regulating valve) as code p34(2) came up. Did this and, to my dismay, the same problem happened again a week later!! The code is p400 (was told this by a different mechanic). I am going to go back to Toyota again but I feel completely at their mercy - any advice would be really appreciated.

Thank you!

Sorry to read about your ongoing probs. When you say that you went back to Toyota do you mean the dealer, or HO? A friend who was getting the runaround from a dealer contacted customer services at Toyota HO and his prob (not the same as yours) was rapidly addressed in a thoroughly business like manner.

His fault was that the engine light came on - no other symptoms. It was resolved by replacing the jets.

Thank you very much for your reply. I went to the local dealer. If they can't resolve the problem I will go to HO. Fingers crossed!
