Basic Mr2 Parts Queries

Hi all i hope to get some valuable info in order to get the most out of my new (old) pride and joy.

I bought a 1991 MR2 a few weeks back, having looked over the car there is evidence to suggest it was originally imported (the 'x' rear brace and evidence it had a g-limited Badge removed at some stage.)

The car runs well enough is in need of a bit of TLC to get her running sweet! bodywork and interior are in superb condition i just need to do some work on the engine etc.

i will ask my questions below and hope that somebody will be able to give some guidance. any input will be graciously received :-)

1. what is the best engine oil to use? (its the 3sge non turbo engine) I spent 20 mins in my local automotive supply shop and was pretty clueless as to what oil to choose! fully or semi-synthetic? 10w/40 5w/40 etc?

2. I think that I could do with replacing the head gasket, is this an easy task? or am I better bringing it to the garage? how long does it take to do?

3. can anybody reccommend any mods or tweaks to improve the engine performance without breaking the bank?

I have previously given any bigger tasks to a garage to sort out, however I feel the need to get my hands dirty with this car and play with the spanners myself :-)
