Clutch + Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I usually lurk on the Verso forum but am in here to ask a question for a friend.

Her Aygo has recently been diagnosed as needing a new clutch. She put it into the local (indy) dealer and has been advised that if the clutch needs changed then so does the gearbox. This sounds very strange to me and have never heard anything like this before. Made worse by the mechanic stating that ALL new cars are like this. I wonder how many years back the term "new" goes!

Can anyone confirm this true or not for me?

Thanks

A gearbox is a gearbox,

A clutch is a clutch.

A clutch can be pretty much destroyed without affecting the gearbox.

On SOME new cars, when you replace the clutch, the engine flywheel is SOMETIMES replaced if it is the new "Dual Mass" type. The Aygo flywheel is the old (solid) type. It should be fine.

The gearbox will have to be REMOVED to replace the clutch. Perhaps she didn't hear correctly.

changed / removed ?

Don't think I've ever heard of an Aygo gearbox failure which required a new one.

The gearbox is removed, the clutch is changed, the gearbox is replaced. Simples!

Take it elsewhere for a second opinion.

That was my initial thought also. They are seperate entities, and although they are obviously linked they should be able to be swapped out independantly.

She has been quoted around £600 for the work. Would this be a ball park figure to replace the clutch alone?

Sorry to revive an old thread.

But I'm looking at getting my clutch replaced soon with this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Citroen-C1-Peugeot-107-Toyota-Aygo-Clutch-New_W0QQitemZ150557250372QQcategoryZ10376QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DDLSL%252BSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D8%26pmod%3D150521479066%252B150521479066%26po%3D%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D6846573075014967909

My local Toyota centre quoted £500 with the part. I'm waiting on a reply from Tanvic down the road as a mate had his clutch done there cheap.

My only thought is, should I change the flywheel as well? Or is it not necessary?

If not change it, I've heard garage's can resurface it?

Bigger Better clutch looks like a good idea.

IN THEORY......The flywheel should pretty much last the life of the car.

On Aygos, it's a simple flywheel, just a lump of solid metal.

Unless the original clutch has been right down to the rivets, it should be fine.

(You would know if you had done this because the clutch would have been slipping, smelling

and probably making nasty noises)

On SOME new cars, when you replace the clutch, the engine flywheel is SOMETIMES replaced if it is the new "Dual Mass" type. The Aygo flywheel is the old (solid) type.

Flywheels can be re-surfaced in extreme cases but it

needs to be done properly and re-balanced afterwards. Not your "average" garage job. Engineering firm.

"Re-surface" is open to interpretation. Whe I've changed clutches, I've always gently cleaned the

face up with fine grade wet & dry paper to de-glaze it. Is that re-surfacing?

I've just been reading up on the internet. Most of them relate to dual-mass flywheels. So as you said. I should be ok.
