Changing Gears.....

When changing gear from 1st through to 3rd the gear stick seems to have problems engaging through the gate, as if it won't lock into gear and can take a couple of attempts to engage it! This is very annoying, does anyone have the same problem, or a resolution to it? :hokus-pokus:

Can it be adjusted to slide into place better or will it require lot's of new bits?

It's a 1990 UK N/A GT T-Ba

Sounds like the Syncros....common thing on MR2's....the gearboxs are great and handle heaps of thrashing but the syncros go and it's hard to get into gear or it clunks when it does. Easiest thing is to just put some really good gearbox oil in.

Cheers

You could try double declutching. It's much friendlier on your syncros, especially if they're worn.

Floor the clutch, put the car in neutral, lift off the clutch and blip the throttle (it doesn't really matter how much as long as you give it enough revs), then floor the clutch again and select the gear you're after, then lift off again as normal.

This is a good habit to get into if you want to show your car some mechanical sympathy on a daily basis as blipping the throttle when the car's in neutral means bits of your gearbox will come together without the syncros having to do anywhere near as much work.
