Slack Gear Change

A neighbour recently had a shot of my 4.1 and commented on how new and crisp the gear change was, he asked me to drive his to see what he ment. I had a shot and the gear change was slack. His car is only a year older than mine with only 5000 miles more, My imidiate thought was his gear linkage maybe needs renewed? would this solve his problem?

its cable operated so perhaps the cables have slackened off ??
