Hello . I am a happy owner of a RAV4 , 2002, 4WD , manual transmission, Diesel .

I'd like to know which kind of oil I have to use in order to replaced the old one, as per Toyota catalog.

I have to change all oil from transmission, transfer case and differential . The engine oil I've allready changed with Mobile 1 5 W 30 .

Thanks a lot for advices .

Hi

There have been a few discussions in the past see;

Personally, I use Castrol Syntrax for all three boxes (as does my local Toyota garage).

Its convenient because you only have to keep one type of gear oil.

However it is expensive, a cheaper solution is to buy separate oils as per your service sheet.

In the front of the RAV4 you have to change 3 separate oils

- Engine

- Gearbox

- Transfer box

The gearbox and the transfer box are not connected and have separate drains and fill plugs.

At the back of the RAV4 you just have to change one oil

- Rear Diff

The gearbox, transfer box and rear diff is shown clearly at the beginning of this thread

Rear diff and transfer box require one specification of oil, the gearbox requires another type.

Alternatively Castrol now do Syntrax Universal which can be used in all three locations because it has a wide spec, but it is expensive.

Your oils specs are on one of these sheets.

Thanks a lot again, but what about front differential ?

Where is it ? I though that the transfer box is same think as diff.

So,the drive shaft coming up from rear diff. stright to trans-axl box ?

I'm asking that because I need to change an oil seal from gear box "behaind differential" according with service mechanic .lol

Thanks for your patience .
