OK

Driving my rav4 04 d4d today just as i came of a motorway it died

I first noticed the steering heavy and looked at the dash and all the warning lights were on and engine stalled

I coasted to a safe place tried bump starting before i ran out of mometium but no go

AA guy reconed it the fuel pump I got it brought to a local garage who is going to look at it tomorrow

he said he'd start at the fueltank if there an electric fuel pump in it.

about 18 months ago i replaced the SVC valves in the fuel pump when the turbo wouldn't kick in which solved this problem

Last week the engine management light came on when i brought it to the garage it showed turbo over boost. this was about 500 miles ago. the engine had gone into limp mode but after a couple of mins with it off it started and drove perfectly

Any ideas Guys?

Cheers

Mac

To start with there is no fuel pump inside the tank, only the HP pump on the engine where you changed the SCVs.

Turbo overboost is usually down to the VSV which controls the turbo vac unit.

Been reading since my last post

my car has the noise associated with the fuel filter cap

I haven't serviced the car in 15k

is there a chance the filter is bollixed?

Edit: my passion is air cooled vdubs can't figure this diesel fuel at all but can rebuild your oul petrol engine in my sleep

I don't know if the filter has a bypass, but would guess it hasn't and if the filter fails and blocks the fuel flow .... Got to be worth a look at it and change it if nothing else whilst it's having a rest at the garage.

15k is too long - especially for the engine oil but the fuel filters las somewhat longer. However, in the light of a problem you should always do the obvious. Change the filter and just see how that filter head primes the fuel up.

In this cold weather it might be water in the filter housing if it has not been changed for a long time. I remember it happening to me many years ago in a Land Rover ( when I used to buy the cheapest fuel that I could get! ). Take the filter off, clean the housing and fit a new filter to start with. Good luck!

hello

OK the engine has died -- it is a consequence. now let's start to investigate this issue and find the reason.

why it has happened? the first question is reasonable -- when the engine was last maintenanced + what has been done other than SCV change. You should not take the pump away unless to understand what goes wrong. HAve you checked with fuel filter drain plug -- whether water was available? Secondly, what is current condition of filter? May be it could be sufficient to change it , have an air escaped and continue to drive ? Now you will have to install the pump correctly + adjust timing. This engine die looks like SCV el signal cut off ocasionally or filter clogging.

It is understood we will know that after trials of starting up again. Good luck + come back with outcome. .Igor

its in the garage and mechanic had a quick look at it this evening

If he primes the filter it'll start for a minute or so and runs perfectly

He gonna replace the fuel filter and see if that helps

  • 2 weeks later...

Just to close this

There was water in the fuel filter that froze and blocked the diesel getting through

I had the fuel filter replaced and a full service done

Always nice to hear of a good outcome - particularly when the problem turns out not to be too serious and reasonably cheap! Well done

Hmmmmm, Always start with the basics, too many people jump to conclusions, maintanance of your car is required, no matter how old it is, especially in the harsh conditions we have had recently
