Hi all,

A friend of mine told me today about a possible recall for faulty water pumps in the Prius. I checked on google and it seems mainly USA models and New Zealand, does anyone know more about this possible problem ?

Regards,

DAVE.

According to Bloomberg and Consumer.org the models concerned were built between 2004 and 2007.

It also affects the UK - see here.

"Toyota has begun what it calls a 'customer satisfaction campaign' to replace the water pump on certain Prius vehicles. Toyota says it's not a recall and the potential issue does not represent a safety risk. The campaign affects Prius models produced between August 2003 and May 2007. Approximately 15,500 UK registered vehicles are affected. Toyota says the water pump could cause the vehicle to lose power, the temperature of the coolant could become high and the Malfunction Indicator Light come on. The vehicle is still safe to drive, insists Toyota. To fix the potential problem, Toyota will install a new water pump at no cost to the customer."

How I know when my Gen2 was built?

You'd have to ask Toyota when your Gen 2 was built. The USA model year can apparently be determined using the VIN, but the UK VIN doesn't use the same encoding scheme. You can get a rough idea of when your Gen 2 was built by when it was first registered in the UK if it was officially imported by Toyota GB.

As above, this is NOT a recall. It is a customer service campaign for the Hybrid Electric Water Pump

There have been a handful of reports in the whole of Europe for this issue. Your Gen 2 will be perfectly safe to drive, and if the pump should go faulty, the MIL light will come on

When more information is available from Toyota, they will announce it through the normal channels

  • 2 weeks later...

I have not been on for some time - how will this campaign work? Will Toyota contact owners, or will it be flagged on the Toyota website?

My Toyota did have something done to a Water pump on its 60K service late last year before I brought it, but the Service Record included amongst the documentation indicates that something was changed or fixed. I have a 56 plate so am sure it will be one of the 15,500 vehicles.

There will be a service campaign in the New year, there is some information on the TOYOTA BLOG

If you are concerned in any way, use the "Contact Us" button on the blog and leave a message for Toyota to contact you

And they have left message on answerphone today to discuss the issue - I suspect that I may be affected, as they would have told me that I'm not affected otherwise.

There are some threads on this issue over on Prius Chat.

Just to update following my conversation with Toyota Customer Services today, letters will be sent out to affected owners in the new year. It does seem as if I may well be getting one. Its the Hybrid Electric Water pump that they are replacing in this campaign. They were also able to confirm the water pump in the petrol engine was replaced at 60K.
