Hi, My wife and I have a 3 door and a five door rav 4 for the last 9years both 1996, they are without doubt the most reliable cars we have ever owned, we are both in our sixties and have owned the usual spectrum of cars. Now the query I have new 215/70/16 tyres on front axle and the rear are needing replaced will it be OK to replace with 215/65/16. Thank you.

With the 4x4 concept, ideally you need each wheel/tyre to have the same rolling circumference (too old to remember maths!!) so that each wheel (ie each driveshaft) turns at the same rate. You could do what you propose but in rewality it would tend to put a strain on the transmission slightly I think. The problems would come whenever you need to fit a spare.... do you carry 2 spares?

The standard tyre for those cars is the 215/70x16 and they also used 235/65x16 as a full set on some. On 2 wheel drive cars, different size tyres and wheels is not a problem.

I use 18" wheels and tyres on both my RAVs but the sets are not interchangeable as I have a different low profile ratio set on each car.... so one set is 10% smaller than the other set. (Am I digging myself into the snow here?? ). In addition the tyres I use are directional so must only be used with the tread pattern facing all the same way to get the benefit of the grip.

Nowadays I think there are a variety of companies making tyres 215/70x16 - back in 1994 it was only Dunlops at £200 each.

If I was you, I'd stick to all the one size.
