Hi everyone

I had a slide on the ice and I need to replace my upper front bumper on my 2002 Yaris, and my Passenger side headlight is cracked.

Please Please Please HELP!!!

My parents are on holiday and I dont want them to think I was driving badly.

I started to slide on the ice at around 5mph and hit the corner of a wall. Only damage is the bumper and the headlamp

get yourself down to your nearest scrap yard is the quickest thing to do, get the replacement parts then and there.

otherwise you'll have to order the parts from toyota.

Out of interest does hte car have colour coded bumpers? if so once ordered, you'd have to get them resprayed.

If you can't afford/do it in time, i'd say replace the headlight, and while the bumper is off, take out any dents/cover any scratches. It won't look as bad.

Get yourself a touch up pen, from Halfords or toyota, and touch up the worst.

finally bite the bullet and fess up. Because you've done as much as you can to correct it, it won't look half as bad.

if the above fails get a large bottle of water and head for the desert.or tell them someone hit it whilst parked.

have fingers crossed whilst lying.

Just come clean with your parents. honesty is always the best policy. I'm sure they will understand that as long as your ok, the car will fix

Yes, I'm going to fess up. But I don't want them killing me for hitting a wall.

I'm asking for help on how to remove and replace bumpers and lights. Things like clip numbers, useful information and possible problems with fitting them. I'm not looking for a counciling session.

Hartside, I'm not having a go at you. I just don't want my parents thinking it's a good idea to fix my car for my Christmas present. It was my mistake, my responsibility.

If you're just going to tell me to fess up, you're basically saying "You're going to lie to your parents, aren't you?" No, I'm not lying to my parents. I'm taking responsibility for my actions.

If the best information you could provide on how to remove and replace a bumper is "Fess up" then I'm glad you're out, and I'll go with Peter Jones instead.

The best info I could have given you is in the redundant Haynes manual sitting in my cupboard that I don't need anymore as a result of buying a newer model two Saturdays ago!

Hmm, after hard help rather than platitudes then? Fair enough ;)

Is Haylands still active here? He's the Ray Mears of our forum

IIRC the bumper was held in by like, two bolts so in theory should be fairly easy to replace. Have a read of Hayland's thread where he basically rebuilds a Mk1 Yaris from scratch!:laughing:

Madasafish gave me a great link which might be useful to you for looking up part numbers:

http://www.toyodiy.com

You'll need to know your VIN for the most accurate lists.

Cyker, you're a legend! Thanks buddy. Checking that post now. Nice one!!!

I'm glad you understood the request for help.

Hartside, I'm glad you have the attitude of social counciling, however, do not seem to have the personal interest in helping another person by going to the cupboard.

I genuinely think you should check your "holier than thou" attitude before you do something as pathetic as not helping someone when you know you can. Not the best "Lead by example" I've encountered.

Based on the posts you sent, I'm guessing your in your mid 40's, single, and live with your parents. Please don't take it personally, I just think you should read what someones asking before you answer.

If you do a search for "Fog Light Installation Manual" on this Toyota web site, the guide includes the details for removing the bumper and the headlights can then simply be unbolted...

However, supporting the principles of what others have said, as an old !Removed! who'd son crashed our Yaris on the only weekend we left it home alone with him, we sometimes believe that our old heads do sometimes contain slightly more life experience than the youngsters....

I know friends of my son's who crashed their parents cars whilst home alone and spent a fortune trying to get it repaired without them knowing. I'd much rather my kids engaged me in the "how best to fix it" discussion so that I could provide input (based on thirty years of driving experience) of how best to get it fixed, where best to get it repaired at a reasonable price, etc.

So I can see both sides of this - yes you feel obliged to fix it yourself, but equally sometimes, some parents do really have some genuine life experience that is still relevant to the modern world...

I started of trying to offer you some advice on how to handle your situation, what I believed was some genuine help as I felt for your situation, and thought your parents would as well. Guess I won't be doing that again!

I'm 26yrs old, son of an accountant and a banker. My parents are celebrating their anniversary in Florida. I don't want them coming back to see a damaged car. "I've had a little accident, slid on the ice. It's ok, everythings fine. A little damage, but got it all sorted."

Wouldn't have been bothered about telling them. They are never home and I have parties all the time. Had to import a coffee table from Vietnam once. I always tell them everything. As long as I take responsibility for my actions, they don't seem to mind. That's all I'm doing now.

Thanks for the links! Very helpful!!!

Hartside, I know what you're saying. I appreciate the thought, and can tell you have a good heart.

What I asked for was help on removing and replacing a bumper and a headlight. That's why I was getting annoyed with you. All I needed was "There are 2 bolts on the bumper......etc" My relationship with my parents is fantastic and I would hope to have as good and open a relationship with my kids as they do with theirs.

26 yrs old and worried what your parents will say because you crunched the corner of an 8yr old Yaris in the ice??

It's winter, sh*t happens! This post has to be a wind up, seriously.

If I'd even scratched my parent's car and hadn't at least attempted to do something about it they'd probably bawl me out for being a careless idiot even if it wasn't my fault so it's not always so clear cut :(

Heck, I mentioned in passing that shunt I had last winter and they now keep bringing it up as an example of how 'careless and irresponsible' I am :censor:

Lucky the OP seems to have relatively sane parents and if he can fix it himself and then tell them what happened AND that he fixed it, well this seems like the optimal resolution  :D

It's cool that you're taking the responsibility anyway :)

It's always good to get some insight from different sides tho', and on this forum we've got all the sides! (The old, the young, mechanical geniuses, responsible advisers, bat-****-crazy nutcases... )
