Abandoned Vehicles

I've been reading, like most people, about the atrocious weather we've all been having of late, and indeed that people in Scotland are still having...

I've also noted the 'abandoned cars' scenarios.... why?

If you abandon your car, where do you go, walk, to where??

Would you abandon 10/15/20k's worth by the side of a road god knows where. for god knows how long, where it could be written off by a snow plough???

What are peoples comments about leaving your pride and joy behind?

cheeky pie-eating monkey. You leave your car no matter what if you

1. need the toilet - carpets are a devil to wash

2. no petrol left and the outside temp is -20C (which it was)

3. have any fear of an articulated truck demolishing you and yer pride and joy (wallet)

4. Have 2000 cars in front of you parked for the night.

Lets hope it doesn't rain in SE Essex tonight in case the motorways etc get shut..... :shutit:

A guy of 68 died last night because he chose to stay with his car. Heart attack from extreme cold symptoms we reckon.

Bothie... I appreciate that, but my point is that where do you go to? I know very little about the west coast of Scotland, but if i got stuck on some parts of Southern england where i live i may have to walk for miles to find shelter, surely it is better to wait with the car for rescue?? I dont know, that is why i asked the question

Later... By rhe way, we dont need rain to close the M25, mr plod does it regularly for us :ffs:

I honestly want to know what possesses a person to go out driving in conditions like what we have now in the first place, even though it's advised they don't and especially later on of an evening when it tends to be a lot colder anyway. O_o

So it's simple. I wouldn't have to abandon my car because I wouldn't have a car to abandon due to the fact I'd be at home, burning me ***** ont th'radiator instead. Am not thick or suicidal.

I'm inclined to agree, but if you are at work when it starts and by the time you leave there is lots of snow on the ground you may not have much choice!

I dont think i could abandon my baby, but who knows.....

I can honestly say I'm thankful for not having the burden that is commuting to work. I live where I work so I can pretty much roll out of the wrong side of the bed looking like death warmed up, and stagger the whole 100 yards it takes to get there. XD

I would never abandon my car in any other circumstance though. Diabolical weather... I just wouldn't use it.

Some walked less than a mile to a Morrisons store to get a coffee and a heat. Some walked 10 miles. The streets have never been busier with folk walking !

The problem on Monday was that NOBODY gave a correct forecast. They all estimated it as at worst a moderate snowfall and as the snow started falling at 9am, everyone had already left for work. So, thousands ended up in a panic to try to get home and the motorways became clogged very quickly as the ploughs hadn't been primed to go out as soon as the snow fell.

the result is that they can't plough the snow as the ice is breaking the ploughs so its down to excavators and JCBs to scrape the ice off. An absolute shambles that has happened before (I remember one time leaving Edinburgh at 5pm to a sudden snowstorm and taking 7 hours to get home and that was 20 years ago). The trick appears to get the roads ploughed and salted before cars have the chance to compact the snow into ice... then clogging up roads so the gritters can't get near.

Well a week ago on Tuesday just past I was on my way back from Glasgow just before the M8 got worse and they closed it. I'd come back from San Francisco (where me boyfriend lives, he has a Starlet by the way! :) ) early Monday afternoon and was threatened with the fact I may have to spend the night in London cause Edinburgh airport was closed. Glasgow wasn't closed so I ended up flying there and spending the night, that's when the snow actually started to effect the South a lot more. The day after, somehow me mam an dad had managed to come pick me up in our trusty Surf when the weather had kinda taken a back seat for a bit. If they hadn't have come get me then, I probably would still be up there.

Some council bloke said on the local radio station yesterday that they have successfully cleared all the A & B roads in the Boarders. We only just managed to get out to town yesterday after a week, party due to the roads not being ploughed or gritted since 2 weeks ago and also partly due to my father being a tit. -_-

:D:  There have been a lot of them about!

New twist to the bad weather here today, temperatures are above freezing for the first time in ages BUT there was rain from Liverpool to Manchester that fell on icey roads, the result is the biggest ice skating rink in Europe, dozens of crashes, motorways and A roads closed, in short CHAOS ACROSS the North West :help:

Kingo

Parking tickets for cars blocking Edinburgh roads

Cars blocking main routes in Edinburgh because drivers have abandoned them in the snow will be given a parking ticket or towed, police have warned. Lothian and Borders Police said motorists who were leaving their vehicles in awkward places were causing major access problems.

A spokesman said cars will be towed if they block an emergency vehicle and fined if they are causing congestion. An abandoned van at Barnton caused huge tails backs earlier.

A 45-year-old motorist told the BBC Scotland news website that her journey into Edinburgh from Newmills in Fife took an extra hour due to the van holding up traffic. She said: "I was so angry that one transit van could cause so much congestion on the A90."People have to stop abandoning their cars in the snow."

Meanwhile parking attendants have not been issuing parking tickets since heavy snow hit the capital. An Edinburgh City Council spokesman said they did not have the powers to issue tickets under the parking regulation order because motorists were unable to see yellow lines covered in snow and ice. A Lothian Buses spokesman said: "Due to icy road conditions and badly parked cars some services are currently not operating their full route."

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said they do have powers to issue parking tickets where cars are blocking roads or causing traffic congestion. He said: "We are asking motorists to think sensibly when they park their vehicles because bad parking is leading to problems with access on the roads now. "Those cars found to be blocking a road will be issued with a parking ticket and those blocking the path of an emergency vehicle will be towed."

So if it gets damaged in bad weather from abondoning it, in that weather we can say total write off then your insurance pays out then you can buy a new shiny car and start over.
