Judder When In First/second Gear

My 2004 Avensis T3x petrol has developped an occasional judder when pulling off in first gear and sometimes in second gear. Reading the forums it sounds like the fix to this problem is to fit a new clutch. Could someone give me an approximate price for this as I know on my old Rover 400 it was over £300 and that was over 6 years ago.

Thanks in advance.

I reckon on about £600 or so. Be interesting to hear how you get on, I have the same problem with mine.

"Test" your clutch first....face car up a slight incline...select first gear with handbrake full on.

Set the gas where you would normally to take away, if not slightly higher revs....let clutch up as normal.

Did it shudder to a stall and try to pull through handbrake?....Clutch still has some life left, so put up with "shudder".

Did the revs stay steady as you let the clutch out, with no signs of wanting to drive / pull through brake?....Knacked.

Sorry if this is a "granny sucks eggs" reply....just trying to spread yer cash flow at this time of the year.

Big Kev.

Ouch, sounds pricey. I'll give the hill test a go. For at least 80% of the time it drives fine but then will go through a phase of juddering, normally when I need to pull off fast from a junction.

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it.

A juddering clutch can mean that there's some sort of contamination on the friction material, such as oil from a damaged seal etc.

Hi,

Does anyone have any update on this problem? Our 2004 Verso has developed exactly the same problem: juddering when pulling off fast in the first gear.

Thanks.

Juddering clutch on take off, can be caused by contamination of the friction plate by moisture or oil, but is usally only apparent in this case on the first few pull offs from standstill in the morning, then the car performs normally. If the juddering is all the time, even when the car is warmed up, then its likely that the diaphragm spring fingers have lost their tension and are causing the clutch plate to not compress fully against the flywheel, leading to jerky clutch engagements - if this is the case, then it will gradually get worse, until the clutch starts to slip in normal drive. A new clutch is the only answer if the diaphragm springs are knackered.

The other cause of judder is that an engine mounting is worn or broken, usually the one that is mounted behind the back of the engine near to the exhaust and the oil sump pan, that limits back and forth motion of the engine.
