Welcome to the club.

Does it still do it if you take the fuel filler cap off?

Hi Anchorman tried this made no difference the noise sounds the same as in in the videos for the fuel problem .It is much more pronounced when cold and seems to come from the turbo area .A diesel engine specialist is going to have a look tomorrow thanks

Hi busy bee

It was probably my video that you saw (maybe on you tube),i had the very same parts replaced by toyota a few years ago now and it stopped the howling....for a few months.

However,the howling soon returned...louder than ever in colder conditions :angry: ,i'm not convinced the noise is from there,as you say....i reckon its from the turbo area

As Anchorman says.....do keep us informed please :thumbsup:

Wasn't there a modified part available for the filter housing then that got modified yet again? Sort of modification mk 1 and 2? Mine used to do this a lot in cold weather. On inspection it looked as though the fuel filter had never been changed and a new 'un last summer sorted it however it does still make a noise sometimes on very cold days.....possibly the derv is a tad more viscous? Overall it does look like summat do do with fuel flow etc from my experience.

Hi all it now appears that the fuel pump in the tank is not working . We disconnected the fuel line at the filter and ran the engine for a short

time but no fuel was pumped from the tank .Have checked voltage a the fuel pump plug and there is 12 volts at the on the plug .There is a value 17 ohms on two pins on the pump side, but no value on the other two (four pins on plug).Should the pump run all the time the ignition is on? Thank for any help busy bee

Hi all we looked in the tank via the fuel sender opening expecting to find a pump ,but could not see one .Does a 2 ltr diesel 2005 RAV on a 55 plate have a pump in the tank.Can any one confirm this, and how does one remove the sender from the tank as it has a pipe fixed to the bottom of it which seems to prevent removal.busy bee

Well thats why I was asking - there is no pump in the fuel tank and was confused by what you were saying. I didn't know if somebody had added one.

I will have a buthcers on what I have for the fuel tank as soon as I get chance but if you want to see if there is a pump in there stop wasting your time. You are in Land Rover teritory there!!!

Hi anchorman yes you are correct there is no pump in tank fuel appears to be drawn through by the SCV valves so still at a bit of a loss on the noise as the engine runs with no other problems thanks busy bee

I had one in the garage only last week with this noise and I reckon it was coming from the timing cover end - nowhere near the fuel filter. In this picture I would be interested in looking closely at the tensioner and the No1 pulley;

There would be quite a lot of work in getting it to the stage where you could run it without but I would do it if I came to do one again. The last timing belt I did, I checked all those pulleys and tensioners and it makes no noise to date.

Hi, did you manage to get the noise sorted?, i have a Toyota rav4 d4d 2.0 2004 xt4 , there seems to be an odd whining noise coming from alternator area maybe?, it soon started after i got it fully serviced, this included fully synthetic Castrol edge oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, pollen filter, sump plug, after it developed the sounds i decided to change the power steering belt but did not change the alternator belt as it seemed to be in good shape, this sound is driving me crazy!!! lol, everytime i cold start the car the sound is there,sometimes it appears when the car is moving , any input would be highly appreciated , and consequently shine some light on this, because its very annoying!!, thanks, this is the link to the sound http://youtu.be/2ChNMS9Ki4c, cheers.
