if its 1.4 its a diesel - in which case, if you're running it at 5000 rpm and its no power, the turbo isn't working.....

if its petrol, its not a 1.4, which might explain why its not got the power you expect....

Something's deffo wrong. The 1.4 D4D can go up most hills in 4th and even the 1.0 shouldn't need to rev that high.

Does it smell funny?

First thought is the turbo's died but that should be pretty obvious (Pulls great up to ~2000rpm then looses power and great clouds of soot pour out the back)

EGR could be stuck open and need cleaning as Igor says, but even with it stuck fully open it shouldn't cripple the engine that badly that you need to go to 1st gear to get up a hill!! (I'm assuming 1st gear if you're doing 5000rpm in a diesel Yaris to get up a hill!)

Only other thing that springs to mind is the clutch is completely gone but, again, that should be fairly obvious...

ifits a diesel then his car may have gone into safe mode, take it to a local garage, not the dealer, get it on diagnostic £30 or so that will tell you whats wrong.
