Reverse Gear Problem - Synch Mesh Problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a Verso 160SX 2006 model. Its been to the dealer numerous times for problems like pulling to the left, starter sounds like its slipping, knock from front when going over speed bumps but the biggest problem right now is that I battle with r-gear. The other probs are also listed and I hope someone could maybe assist with what to look for.

According the dealer, the Verso gearbox runs on synch mesh technology ...BUT...the reverse gear has been excluded from it. The dealer has advised that when I battle to get the r-gear, I should

- put the car in neutral

- release the clutch

- engage another gear

- neutral again

....and then try the r-gear. Does this sound normal? Is this a characteristic of synch mesh? The gearbox sometimes makes a grinding noise when I try r-gear and its started doing it intermittently when I try 1st and 2nd too.

However ....at the last repair service (car been back there 7 times already), they "lubricated" the gearbox which sort of worked but now the problem is back and is progressively worse. Am I causing damage to the gearbox?

The car pulling to the left is somewhat a mystery too. Wheel alignment, balancing and rotation has been done and readings are perfect. Suspension, tie rods, shocks and cv joints checked - no problem. The service centre I took it to, said it could POSSIBLY be the steering column and/or power steering? What happens is that when the car is in neutral and no hands on the steering, it keeps straight but the minute accelaration is applied, it pulls left almost immediately. This also happens when I am holding the steering. I know I should make allowance for torque steer but this is ridiculous? It pulls left quite badly.

The starter problem is the same whirring/spinning sound you would hear from a mechanical starter. I know the Verso starter is electronic(push start button) so I am not sure why I hear this sound?

Thanks in advance for help.

sounds about right, theres no synchromesh on reverse and the slight grinding noise is the cogs having to change direction

is the clutch ok?is the fluid in the clutch new or old?

dont take this funny but is your seat close enough so you press the pedal to the floor?

Hi Versoowner2,

Its all good. This problem has been happening since I bought the car in August this year. I think they should have checked and/or changed the clutch fluid at last service. Does this car not have an hydraulic clutch though?...so no fluid and/or cable or am I misunderstanding the whole mechanical concept here?

No problem with getting to clutch pedal. The clutch is pressed right in(to the floor) when I try the gears. I am now having probs with 1st and 2nd as well.

Sounds like the clutch might not be breaking off properly, oil on the clutch plate will cause this type of problem. As for reverse there is no syncro

Kingo

I understand that reverse is not part of the synch mesh but is it normal to grind into gear? As for the intermittent starting problem, I've been able to find when it happens - when my parklights and/or hazards are left on for more than 5mins. Come on, surely these things cannot be drawing that much current from Battery?

the dealer has just come back to me and guess what .....they find NO problems on the car! WOW! This after I had two ppl in the car with me on seperate occassions and both saw the same problems. they also claim that i need to replace the Battery at my own cost - this will apparently resovle my starting problem - even though it was reported within the warrantee period. Man, i'm so sick and tired of this motor dealership
