Coolant Loss !

Hello All,

Have just changed the rear pads (nice and easy btw) and while giving it a clean and top of of windscreen washer I noticed the coolant level was very low. I had noticed it wasnt full a month or so ago but it has definitely dropped. Also this time i noticed some coolant residue (pinkinsh on the top of the coolant resevoir exp cap). Ive got everything crossed that this isnt the dreaded Head gasked problem.

ANy ideas guys...... dodgy cap maybe??

Coolant loss is never a good sign.

A pressure test or chemical test of the coolant for combustion gases may reveal more.:)

Hiya this does not sound good have a look around the forum for the dreaded head gasket failure on the 2.2. I had the same problems on mine at 72000 miles took 4 months and a letter to toyota chairman to get this recognised by toyota and a new engine circa £7.000 was fitted but no guarantees that it wont happen again make sure you have all documentation if your warranty has expired and be prepared to fight tooth and nail good luck.

hi again ask a friendly garage to do a sniffer test aa did mine thats how i found out it was gasket but it still costs £1000 for investigation at toyota so it is wise to get a report and contact toyota to see what they will do before letting them get there grubby hands on it and strip it down to the max and charging you for the privelage, get some sort of letter from mr t to say what they will do if the worst comes about as they are very vague as to what exactly they are going to do, trust me i know £12.500 losses make you more aware for the future.

mmmmmm just bought aome of the pink coolant ...... £30 quid but only had to put a small amount in to bring it back to full level. Have checked cap on properly and will keep an eye on it. Think the cap might be dodgy

turned out to be the water pump....... leaking. Was told its a common fault which can lead to the head gasket failing if not rectified in time. i wander if this is the root cause of all of the hg failures out there. Fortunatly i keep a regular check on levels. Also they did under the warranty even though i was on 68000 and 4 months over the 3years. Good on them.

They also changed the front pads and disks for £180 which i though was pretty reasonable for a main dealer. Very impressed.
