09 Brake Noise

aquired an 09 avensis tr six weeks ago, when i first picked up the car the brakes pads and discs gave a rumble at low speed like the discs had spots of rust on them. the dealer said no problem its because the car had been standing on the forecort for a few weeks and it will wear off.800 miles later and the noise is still there, the brakes work fine just the low speed rumble. can anybody with a new shaped avensis tell me if this is normal for the model as its the first car in 30 years that has done it without there being a problem with the discs or pads. thanks for any help anybody can give me.

Personally i would demand that the dealer fix it for you, let them know what the dealer said at the time and emphasise that (given Toyota's recent negative press) brakes are not something that they can dismiss off hand.

Not sure if its an inherent problem but i have just had to replace my brake pads as at low speeds I was getting a grinding / rumbling noise. Didnt notice it at higher speeds. My pads were very worn.

Hi

My Avensis 09 2,0 D4D have developed a ratteling noise from brake calipers.

It can be clearly heard when driving on winter roards, or rough roads.

From my point of wiev, this is due to the fact that the caliper guide pins have too much play in bushings in carrier, and anti rattle spings are not installed.

Caliper can be toggeled up and down and you hear this clicking sound.

This was heard the fist winter, when the clock had 12.000km.

I have claimed it to Toyota, but they say that this is OK, and there is no fix for it.

They put som grease inside bushings for guide pins in carrier. This dis not help.

Now it is my second winter, with snowy roads in Norway, and this clicking sound is irritating me.

I have been in longer discusions with Toyota, and they have agreed to take in the car at the 17th january and look into the problem again.

They are talking about changing calipers and carriers at front.

However I feel that their impression is that I am paranoid with sounds/noises.

If new calipers have the same problem, this is a construction error.

Brake system, (calipers), are Bosch on my car.

Can it be the same problem you are describing?

The problem with rattling calipers are a problem from the early days with disc brake systems, so I am suprised that this shall be an issue on an new car theese days.

an update on the brake noise

toyota had the car in to look at the noise and they skimmed the discs to remove any build up,noise was improved but still there so went back to toyota and was talking to the head workshop tech who said that the noise was down to the materials which toyota use in their brake pads and discs, basically rock hard pads and soft discs and that they expect the discs to only last 40000 miles,he said that a lot of the other new models were also effected by the brake rumble, so when the time comes i will not be fitting toyota discs and pads and hopefully that will cure the noise.

Sounds like <the spuds of lurrrrvve>s to me. Pads are not meant to drag on the disc when the brakes are not applied. The material in the pads & discs is irrelevent, the brakes should release fully when the pedal is released. Second opinion time I think.

I'm with Druid Boy, neither my 2010 tourer, nor the 2009 tourer we had for 6 months had any sort of Brake rumbling, it all sounds a bit bully to me, if its common on lots of other new models why skim the discs?

No noise on my car. As others have said, if it were an inherent problem with the materials used, then we'd all have the problem. I'd go back demand they change the pads and discs.
