OK - Took wheel off - took ABS sensor out - IT looked clean, cleaned it anyway, replaced and codes still there....

Shorted out PINs 4 and 13 - still getting ABS 33

Tried to clear the codes with pressing brake pedal 8 times within 5 secods or less - Tried several times and they would not clear at all...Diconnected the battery for 20 mins - still the same....

Appart from booking it in at Westlands - any suggestions....(especialy why I can't now clear the errors??)

Think I pumped the pedal extra couple of times than 8 (couldnt remember how many at a time) and it took a sec delay to clear the codes.

Did you see the ring if it looked okay, a squirt of electrical / brake cleaner on the ring wouldnt do any harm to loosen any dirt.

Might be worth going for quick spin, check codes again to see if 38 appears again too?

or if it just stays with 33.

Did the wires look healthy enough?

Yes pumped the pedal loads...did not look at the ring to be honest....I am getting a little fed up with it now - lets see what happens tomorrow - will give it a run now....

By the way - a question - lets hope I did the correct wheel:

ABS 33 = rear right abs sensor....that is the rear drivers side isn't it ???

Thanks Smiler! - but what / were is the diagnostic port fuse??

Its in the fuse box under glove compartment passenger side, theres a panel that unclips off then you have fuse box lid which has diagram of fuses, i seem to remember it was called DIAG? or OBC? and was a brown 7.5amp fuse, near middle of the run of fuses. The diagram will keep you right.

I know its a bit frustrating with another thing to check but could be another step forward, or at least for peace of mind.

Once again thanks Smiler....Bye the way last night I thought I would try to clear the faults...cleared straight away....anyway later that night me and the missus went out ...started up - no faults - backed off the drive - no faults - let it freewheel down the road - at about 5 to 10mph the faults all came back....

Anyway - will check the fuse tonight....

Bu**er.

Hate to say, but if the codes cleared and then came back again after, the fuse / diag port is working ok.

Is still just 33 & 38, no other codes?

ABS is still just 33 now - others are the same as before....

Mmm, Looks like it will be a new sensor then.

The very last thing might be wrong / dirty is the electrical connector but its located on the inside of the car behind the side boot panel.

Its a bit of a pain in the butt removing the panel, def' not an evening job if doing it first time.

Anyone got some instructions on how to remove the rear Panel...is it easy but long winded ????..

Smiler - being that the connecter is internal to the car, do you think it would get dirty...

Cheers!

Chances are ,the connector, no, and going by what you are saying now I probably wouldnt bother looking at connector.

Reason being if warnings arent coming up until you move, then the ECU does see the sensor as being present - ie. light goes on then off on startup during its self test process thingy.

So its more to do with the signal end - sensor itelf or sensor reading the ring / teeth.

I would thought it would be pretty bad on Toyotas quality if the ring / teeth are damaged or loose on a 3/4 year old car - but could it also become dirty, affecting the signal quality???

Would you belive it - started up to leave work last night...looked at the dash to see if my 3 new friends were there blinking at me when low and behold I got nothing for a few seconds.....then....a message about heat in the transfer box and another new message about 2WD...then they went off after a few seconds and my old mates came back....

ABS - Check 4WD and VSC....

Oh Crap! :censor:

Maybe not "oh crap", but im thinking theres crap lodged itself somewhere.

Thats what happened with me for about a week, exactly the same, then follwing week after lights/warning were on they would go off themselves after a while to the point they have never returned.

The high heat transfer case is a "false code" generated.

How long a drive are you taking the car and averaging what speed?

This is probably going to sound daft but I recall having to do a 80mile round trip mostly sitting at sixty, would that help throw any crap lodged between the teeth off???

I do 60 miles a Day - Mainly on the Motorway.....I do 75 ish on the way to work...and about 80 to 85 on the way home.....There are a few places that I do give it some beans - rev to about 3.5 k in 3rd and 4th.....

It did not do that this morning (I went to a different Site (Gaydon....) - then Lunchtime back to Solihull (work for JLR).....did not do it again ... so still giving the 3 usual messages...

I have now done 48.5 K miles so in for a service soon .... don't know if i ought to wait until then to get it done....see what happens....

While its off, i would remove sensor again and give a quick blast of brake cleaner in the ring teeth.

OK - friday afternoon bought some brake cleaner - go it all of again....inspected the wiring - all looked OK...blasted the ring teeth as instructed - moved the ring around several times to ensure it all got a blast of cleaner....

Re-assembled - cleared the errors...they came back immediatley...thought are well I have give it my best shot....Drove it to clear any excess off...still no different..

Sat morning started her up - No messages...reveresed off the drive...down the road and the High Temp and 2WD messages came on for a few mins until my old ones came back....

What I will do is see what happens by the end of the week....

Also PC has gone t!t$ up!...tried a new PSU..no good - Mobo is on its way...so have ordered a new one...what a week...!

Just checking, but I take you meant you moved the wheel round to move the ring and that the ring didnt move freely itself?

Think we tried about everything now bud, looks like a new ABS sensor im afraid.

Bu**er, lights came back on tonight, usual codes 33/38.

Its been heavy rain up here last couple of days too.

Did notice where sensor goes through wheel well, just before the grommet, the small "claws" that grip the wire to grommet are open and totally caked in wet road crud.

Cleaned it up and put tie clip round it to close the small "claws" grips, light is intermittently coming on and off now, so think found the problem.

However looks like water has got in and already done the damage, new sensor time. :(

Smiler - let us know if the new sensor does the job.....

Busy weekend this weekend no time to have another look (new PC arriving...family etc)......will try the week after to have an even closer look at the blooming thing.....

Cheers m8t
