I find that the car is less likely to stall in difficult snow manoeuvring if the 4WD is locked on. I read somewhere in a review that the 4WD lock button locked the differential, implying that nearside and offside wheels would be locked which seems highly unlikely. Is that the case or does the button just lock in the 4WD?

Normally a 4wd diff lock does exactly that so both wheels have drive during slippage

Take a look in the cars sections and welcome to the forum.

You might find that diff lock is just a front and back jobbie.

If you use the diff lock I think you are limited to about 25mph, and it is basically to get you out of trouble ie deep snow or mud.

This is from the brief guide

Four-wheel drive lock mode can be used when a large amount of drive power needs to be

applied to all the wheels, such as when the vehicle gets stuck in mud and you need to free

it.

Push the button

The torque of the engine is distributed to the rear

wheels to the maximum extent possible in accordance

with driving conditions.

Four -wheel drive lock mode can be

operated when the engine switch is on.

Four -wheel drive lock mode

Four -wheel drive lock mode is cancelled when the

brakes are applied to ensure the ABS and VSC system

operate effectively.

Four -wheel drive lock mode is cancelled when the

vehicle speed exceeds 25 mph.

The brief guide can be downloaded from the TOYOTA WEBSITE

Or you could read the handbook

I'm pretty sure the system is the same as the RAV4.3, and there is a good thread on it here

In particular, there is a PDF doc that explains it, and a training video that shows it working diagramatically, once you've waded through the interactive overview. The interesting bit is at 'full time 4WD (on demand)' - 'RAV4' - 'electromagnetic coupler'
