Toyota Avensis2003 D4D T Spirit! Won't Start

Hi All

Please i need help and believe i'll get one here. I bought a Toyota Avensis2003 D4D T Spirit! on 87k about three days ago but to my suprise when i tried starting yesterday the car didn't start initially but finally started and it worked fine for the whole day so i thought it was not serious or just the Battery but this morning when i wanted to go out it did same thing and i've been trying to get it started for over 4hrs.

When i turn the ignition, i hear the normal sound of the fuel pump and some click sounds to show engine is about to be engaged but when i turn the ignition finally to start i don't hear any noise or crank sound and the light to the Battery, handbrake, oil and check engine remains on with no single blink.

Just wondering if anyone as had this type of problem before and what do i do. Please i need your advice

Abbey

Based on what you said, Sounds like Battery. try to use jumper to confirm it. New Battery are gel based and even if single cell / column is faulty, whole Battery can be useless.

Try jumper and see if it helps. If it does, then you need a new battery.

When you try to start is, does the other lights (engine, abs and all others) dim / fade out bit, if yes battery.

Thanks for your response

When i switch the ignition on, all the dashboard light comes on but when i try to start everything goes off except the Battery, check engine light, hand break and oil light. Do you think that could be the Battery

Hi mate as others have said get jump leads and try it, if starts then for sure the Battery is duff but i'm pretty sure it is anyway. Put the headlights on and try to start the engine, get someone to watch if the headlights go dim or out, this will prove 100% the battery has gone if they do.

Good luck .... Pete.

Hi Thanks

I just did that now but everything remains as it is. The head light is very full and not going dim can't just figure out what the problem is.

Any other advice will do please maybe if ther is any fuse are plug or resistor that prevent car stating. Advice will be highly appreciated

Faulty starter motor is the most likely culprit so that means a bump or tow start ...... both of which are difficult in this weather!.

Hi Pete

Thanks for the insight i actually called in RAC since i have a cover with them and when the motor starter was tapped once it immediately started working. Another thing is do you know how much it cost and is it possible for me to fix it myself? Please advice

Hello again Abbey, it is always difficult to give advice when it comes to actually repairing a car. I have worked on a wide range of vehicles all my life and wouldn't think twice about removing and overhauling a starter motor but if say to you to do the same job you may not even know where the starter motor is, on the other hand you may have worked on cars yourself and be up to the job. As you asked the question I assume you don't do much on cars so can I suggest you find a local and trusted auto electrics man who will be prepared to either remove and overhaul the starter motor or just fit a recon one that comes with a guarantee, this will be a lot cheaper than going to a Toyota dealers.

If you have a mate who does a bit on cars and will help you then just go to a local motor factors buy a recon starter and get him to fit it, job done!;).

Best regards .. Pete.

I'm glad I was able to help and that you got a great result, it sounds like you found a decent guy to do the job at a very good price..

Best regards and all the best to you and all on the forum for the festive season and the New Year :D.
