I am building car for long distance rally events. The Corolla All Trac wagon, given it's apparent indestructability, rough surface handling and carrying capacity, seems a good platform to start. However it needs horsepower. Any suggestions on what engines can be easily substituted for the 4A-FE they come with.

I put a twin cam engine in one back in 1995. The best advice I can give you is to get a doner car for the engine so you will have access to all the parts you need. BTW I sold the car to my brother in law and he sold it with 285,000 miles on it.
