probably a stupid question, but my auris is the first car ive owned with anti lock brakes

when on a snow/ice surface and the anti lock brakes kick in when braking and the pedal goes hard and starts pulsing, do i keep firm pressure on the pedal when trying to come to a complete standstill or lift off pedal(very weird sensation when pedal feels solid and pulses)

any advice please ?

The pedal pulsing is to tell you the anti-lock braking system is working, basically to prevent the wheels from locking up & sliding.

From experience when driving on snow/ice when it pulses keeping the foot on the pedal does not help it to stop any quicker.

Always keep an extra distance in bad road conditions snow & ice as your aware stopping distance is reduced.

The simple rules of driving in snow/ice in my opinion are:

Good tread on tyres correctly inflated

Take your time

Keep a longer distance

Brake gently but more regularly will prevent the wheels from locking

Use your gears to reduce engine speed

Please note this is just advice, driving habits & road conditions all can vary take into consideration your as safe as you make yourself.

Drive safely.

With anti lock brakes when you feel the pedal "pulsing" under your foot- KEEP PUSHING HARD.

The anilock system will brake better than you.

DO NOT release pressure on the brake pedal- then your brakes will not be applied and you will crash.
