Hi,

Yesterday after a short while through the journey , the gearbox became

notchy and the clutch pedal would stick and not travel back up . The clutch point

is more or less where it was prior to this . Seems difficult to put into gear too .

Anyone any ideas ?

Cheers

Difficult to say, but could be a faulty clutch master cylinder. Best get it checked out.

From the Yaris mk2 workshop manual, section "clutch does not disengage":

1. Clutch pedal (Free play out of adjustment) CL-3

2. Clutch line (Air in line) -

3. Master cylinder cup (Damaged) CL-9

4. Release cylinder cup (Damaged) CL-12

5. Clutch disc assembly (Out of line) CL-15

6. Clutch disc assembly (Excessive runout) CL-15

7. Clutch disc assembly (Lining broken) CL-15

8. Clutch disc assembly (Dirty or burned) CL-15

9. Clutch disc assembly (Oily) CL-15

10. Clutch disc assembly (Lack of spline grease) CL-15

Sounds like the return spring's broken or dropped off the clutch pedal. Worth sticking your head into the driver's footwell to have a look.....

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

I had a look under the foot pedal, seen a spring and lubed it etc - made no difference everything seems okay, included the spring which seems intact.

The car today has become very difficult to get into gear now :(, in fact i cant get it into gear unless the car is switched off and started with it in 1st gear.

Clutch pedal sticks too, however doesn't effect the clutch that much, well disengaging etc.

I take it the yaris mk2 has a hydraulic clutch if not is it a cable type? and also brake fluid is shared with the clutch?

Could someone tell me the correct clutch fluid to be used and gearbox fluid?, if it is indeed hydraulic.

Cheers

Brakes and clutch share the same brake fluid reservoir.

Next thing to check is the level of brake fluid in the reservoir - but if it is dangerously low - there's a leak somewhere and that could be anywhere in the brake or clutch system.

No point just topping the fluid up, because if the symptoms you're getting are caused by low fluid, then just adding fluid won't fix them, because there will be air in the system that needs to be bled out.

The clutch is designed to stop working first if the fluid leaks out as its better that the clutch stops working than the brakes!

Unless you've experience of fixing brake components and bleeding systems, don't try it - its too safety related - just get it to a reputable garage.

But if the brake fluid isn't low in the reservoir, then its not that either...

Yes i have knowledge and have changed brake oil etc on my own car. To me it was either the spring, or cylinder NOT the clutch plate etc.

My GF took it to a garage as i didn't have time to look at it, they said its the clutch which i expressed my disbelief (i rang them up) that it would be the clutch on a 45k 3.5 year old car. They investigated further and turned out it was the master cylinder.

It was an expensive @£200 but i imagine the part would be in excess of £100 from toyota (3rd party ones seem to be around £80) and they'd have to change the oil/bleed it etc.

Anyhow its fine now, i was worried about the cylinder being inside the gearbox like some cars.

Thanks all for the info.
