Rav 4 D4D Loss Of Power

Hi all, wow love this site, Am officially "membered up"

Have just bought a 2003 Rav 4 D4D 3dr (is that a 4.1 or 4.2) with 105k miles. I am leaving UK for home (Greek islands) day after boxing day & since I picked up my much loved Rav on 24/11 I have done 1600 miles without fault in all traffic situations.

Today (its been very cold / minus 3) I was coming up a hill & suddenly had loss of power, EML came on & car would only do 15-20mph. Resets temproarily if I switch off & then re start it.

Used to be in the car business so have a little knowledge about these things, just found this amazing site & see that soooooooooo many people have had this problem.

Ironic thing is have booked car in for a service & MOT on 23rd Dec ready for the long trip back to Greece (car last serviced 11,000 miles ago) but now wondering if I should get it in earlier now & try to get to the bottom of this fault in good time. I see a lot of people say that its not so bad in warmer climes so I may be ok if I can get there??

Any advice would ne much appreciated, I guess everyone is going to ask me the fault code, maybe I can get that tomorrow??

Please help guys, typical that this should happen just before I'm leaving, having said that, probably better it did it here & not in the middle of the Alps!!

Eagerly awaiting some help!

Stuart

Welcome to the club.

These faults usually centre around the SCvs or the VSV. I'm calling it quits for tonight now but maybe somebody else will search for the info.

I am going to have to get this lot pinned. You will find good info in the pinned section on the SCVs

I have just had a similar sounding problem in my D4D. Mine was also reluctant to start. I bought a falt code reader from Argos, plugged it in and it said fuel pump problem. Made sence as it was starved of fuel - not flooded after 20 sec. of turning over and very little power - did not want to rev. Ichanged the SCVs and it fixed it. Good post on this site with Pics to help you. Good luck. The code reader will let you know the cause of porblem. Thats important as SCVs are over £200 so you dont want to fit them on a hunch. It could be other things. I am sure someone will post on this forum to help.
