Rav4 Versus Xc90 Swedish Thing

Ladies and Gents,

I have until the end of January to convince my Managing Director mate to buy a top spec. ex-demo RAV 4, and NOT to buy a Volvo XC90. He will be test driving mine, which in fairness is probably not representative of today's model, then off to Toyota and McVolvo to do same. I have no cognisance of the Volvo....ah just think it looks snide, and from what I hear it guzzles fuel like Bothy does pies.

As he trusts my judgement generally on cars, and is aware of my worthwhile contributions to this site (?), I crave your indulgence one and all for any comparative literature or DAVRAV HYPER-LINKS to help me sway him from the Volvo. Please bear in mind his wife is a Volvo fan, so OUR input may be totally futile.

Thanks in advance,

Big Kev :help:

Well, on the road outside my house, it was an XC90 that got stuck spinning its wheels (and a Discovery). No probs for the RAV - even my dad's Honda CRV got past.

When the XC90 came out, it did get rave reviews. But serious user testing over the past few years has taken the shine off it.

I was going to suggest having a look at the complaints on the XC90 forums. But then he might want to have a look at this forum...

I had the pleasure of towing one of those XC90s up a snowy road recently and put a (rather smug, I'm afraid) post on his forum.

RAV4 vs XC90

Nuff said, I think.

Have you seen the Which? 2010 Car Survey, BK? Maybe too late now but there are a quite a few bits comparing the RAV4 with some other 4x4 / SUV's. On reliability the RAV4 (06 on) comes out on top 89.2% reliability, compared to the XC90 which comes in at 11th place on 79.7%. In the text, they say the XC90 "...continues its patchy reliability record..." and says to consider the XC60 instead.

Not sure babout XC90 but for an XC60 will get at least 15% discount plus maybe a few extras thrown in.

Not sure he'll get much discount on a RAV.

Which? says you should target at least 24% discount on the XC90 - which tells you a lot! :)

Quotes 10% discount target for RAV4.

My borther in-law has an XC90 D5 it a huge beast of a car, quite different to the Rav4? I would think they are not a similar comparison? He would be better comparing against and Landcruiser/Disco/Toureg/X5/Q7...?

I think alot of this debate comes down to tyres on the car. My brother inlaws XC90 was terrible in the now on standard tyres, so bad he wouldnt even drive until recently when he managed to source All Terrains. People think ooh I have a £40K 4x4 it must be superb but dont realise they are running on low profile or summer tyres which are utterly crap on these winter roads on such big, heavy vehicles.

In summary - get good tyres

Rant Over ;)
