Sudden Halt And Ocassional No Power

Hi,

I have bought Avensis 03 T4 D-4D with 85K on it.

Car is brillint. I am having two minor issues.

1- Halt

My car does halt when I try to pull out of junction, or getting into round about. It happens occasional, about once in every day.

No engine light, no other problem.

If I pull out without pressing the gas and rely only on releasing the clutch slowly, it is 9/10 fine. Only 1/10 to go for halt.

But if I am releasing the clutch and pressing the gas at the same time then it does 5/10 halt, very sudden and engine turns off.

It gives you feeling like you hit into somebody.

2- Sudden Loss of power:

It happens when I drive in lower RPM especially in 5th gear.

When I am driving in 5th for about 15-20 minutes on 70 and increasing gas very gently (Eco friendly), then it loses the power. No matter how hard I will press the gas, it will not accelerate.

I take the gear to 4th and push gas very hard and turbo kicks in. That is the only way of getting out of this mode.

Do you think it can be?

1- Turbo lag. If it is, does that means my turbo is going to die soon? Should I be worried.

2- EGR Valve: Can it be that? I am going to clean it soon.

3- Glow plug: No I am not silly, but somebody on this forum mentioned the same problem without any engine light, and toyota changed glow plug and it worked for him.

4- Dirty Fuel Filter?

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks.

cant see any problem in asking help as many times as one needs to.

if you look at TODAYS TOP POSTERS its a surprise how many posting some people do.

no harm in that though.the only concern is they get help when its required

thats what its all about.

I think I give enough input to this forum to understand that.

I usually reply with help when a question goes unanswered or seems very urgent.

OK SAM,

Firstly Merry X-mas and STOP to work during these days :D

AS to your head ache -- it clear looks your baby needs to be serviced to live further.

OK let's start matey !

1) It is very true there were a lot of entries ragrding to either loss of power.

2) Nobody tells you're silly one !!!

3) The below listed are your enemies not giving the same outcome you have, as follows:

- air in the injection system;

- clogged fuel filter;

- abnormal air suction thru work gaskets positioned on the top of the injection system;

- both SCVs are about to die (solenoid coils);

- fuel injectors required testing on the fuel stand with injection portion calibration or even tips changing;

- clogged air filter (engine's);

- partly blocked EGR valve (more likely now);

- poor working of turbocharger (due to previous item).

Check with the above and revert to go further -- but not today cos a bottle is heating up on the table :DDDDDD

Good Luck/Igor

The loss of power symptoms sound similar to the symptoms I had when my Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve failed although my 2006 Avensis 2.2D4D blew a huge cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust at the same time. It also lit the TCR light on the dash board. Loss of power due to the EGR valve may also explain the stalling when pulling away. Your dealer can diagnose the fault with a very quick connection to the diagnostic computer.

:toast: to Igor.

That is what I call help and extensive help.

Finished with EGR valve, but worried about something, please see my other post.

I will search for above mentioned reasons and check them one by one.

Merry Xmas.

Dear all,

1- EGR valve cleaned. see the photos here.

My link

I have driven car today for approx 20 miles, very smooth and very responsive, cruised on 50 MPH.

No problem so far but will try it for more mileages and will update you.

2- Checked air filter and found this. I am not sure if it is too dirty for diesel engine as it is my first diesel car (not to drive but to own and maintain). Do I need to change it instantly or can I wait for next service (due after 7000 mileages)?

Top shot.

All filters get a bit dirty (thats their job) and more so at this time of year with the extensive grit on the roads.

Give it a good knock on something hard to shake off excess and maybe hoover it out so you know its clean.

I wouldn't worry about replacing it to be honest. The occasional clean should be enough.
