Hello folks,

I am looking for good service garages for my Toyota Avensis near RG1 (Reading) area. I know there is octogon Toyota here but would prefer to have a local garage. Any recommendations please....

Thanks,

-Ismail

I used to use Octagon on the outskirts of Reading when I lived there (near the Morrisons store). To be fair they were pretty good on price and their service was very good.

I have also used RJ Day to do work on other cars and motorcycles, including MOTs over a number of years. They were very good although their facilities are a bit basic (small waiting room but free coffee) and they are the other side of the M4 in Finchampstead. The local motor traders use them a lot so I guess that is a good endorsement of their service. Also at the entrance to the industrial estate there's a burger van that does demon breakfasts, bacon rolls etc to help pass the time while your car is on. I think they might even collect your car and return it to you but I'm not sure. Contact details below.

Forgot to say: if you do go with Octagon for the service DO NOT pay for their oil. Toyoata dealers typically charge between £60-£80 for 6 litres of oil. This is an outrageous price. You can buy 2x 4 litre cans of Castrol Magnatex for about £58 in Halfords - I get it cheap (£44ish) on a trade card - and they often do offers such as buy one get the second half price making it about £45. Buy it while it is cheap & keep it in the garage.

You are perfectly entitled to provide your own oil, both Octagon and Toyota World were cool with it every time I do it and they return the unused oil to you for next time. Just make sure you tell them when you book it in and drop it off and check your bill before paying. Oh and if they offer you a litre bottle to keep in the boot to top up with reject it. They offered me one last time - cheeky sods. It was well expensive and guess what? My car doesn't burn any oil so doesn't need topped up. Even if it does you can get it cheaper.

Reckon I save about £40 each service just by providing my own oil. Also I am thinkng about doing my own minor services as it is basically just a change of oil and oil filter and a bunch of 'check this & check that'. That should save me another £50 - but it does depend on me having the time to do it.

Hi

You could try Rotechnics in Grazely. They are actually a mazda specialist but they deal with all sorts of Japanese cars and as a result tend to get Japanese parts cheaper and easier than most places. Also the thing I've found with them is that they are honest! Speak to either David or Colin in the workshop as they are the most knowledgable.

Cheers, Hanksy
